Message from CLUW on the Fair Minimum Wage Act
From CLUW
For the past four years, the federal minimum wage has been stuck at just $7.25 per hour – a poverty-level wage that leaves millions of workers unable to afford the basics.
In the coming weeks, the Senate is expected to vote on the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour and index it to rise with the cost of living.
Call your Senators at 888-705-5182 and tell them to vote YES on the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013.
30 million low-paid workers would get a much-needed raise if the minimum wage were increased to $10.10 per hour. And with higher wages, more Americans will be able to afford food, housing, and other necessities – generating more consumer spending that will benefit local businesses and support economic growth.
Importantly, the Fair Minimum Wage Act would also raise the minimum wage for tipped workers, which has remained stuck at just $2.13 per hour for the past 20 years. With women making up 70 percent of tipped workers, it’s critical to raise the tipped minimum wage to promote pay fairness as well as economic security for this growing workforce.
Our economy cannot afford another year of poverty-level wages. Call your Senators at 888-705-5182 and tell them to vote YES on the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013.
A tweetchat—using the hashtag #RaiseTheWage—is scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday 11/20. Follow along!
