The theme for October's box is "Fairytale Forests", and I've been really looking forward to this book. But I think they could have done more with the 'forest' theme, instead it seems like the items are split into two. Two really fit with a foresty theme, the other two are just. Purple.
The featured book is "After the Forest" by Kell Woods. This is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel, and the actual plot sounds pretty good, although I'm hesitant about the fact that it's a fairytale retelling. I do actually have to try reading some of these books, though. I hardly ever actually read the books in these boxes, I just… collect them. Awful. This edition features printed artwork edges and artwork endpapers, as well as a bound-in author letter. It also has a incredibly cool artwork hardcase under the jacket!
The first item is a replica sword (otherwise known as a "letter opener") based on Nightfell from "The Cruel Prince". I've got too many of these now, but this is easily my favourite! It fits really well with the theme, and it's a gorgeous design.
The next item is a set of page tabs inspired by "Bitterthorn". I really love the design of these, but there's not many of them, and they're so unique I won't be able to use them as I normally do when annotating, so I think I'm going to have to think really carefully about which book I use them in.
Next is a desk mat. This is inspired by "The Last Tale of the Flower Bride". It's a really, really gorgeous design, the artwork is incredible. But I mean - I don't have a desk. Also, it doesn't fit with the theme, aesthetically. I might take it in to work and try to sneak it into an office.
The last item is a sketchpad, based on "Once Upon a Broken Heart". I really like the design. It's a lovely soft touch cover with beautiful foiling on the front. Personally, I would have preferred plain pages, rather than the dotted bullet journal pages they've gone with, but that's okay. It’s an absolutely gorgeous colour!
