Thought I’d make a post about character roles in this AU!

Aang: He’s a fairy! Training to be a fairy godparent. Katara is his first-ever charge, and he really doesn’t want to fail her. He/they. (Fairy Godmother)

Katara: An orphan taken in by Lord Ozai at the age of eight. She’s determined to get out, but until she does, she bides her time. She/her. (Cinderella)

Sokka: N/a

Toph: A girl from the Farmlands whose parents are hellbent on keeping her safe, even if that means she never has fun at all. But when Toph discovers a rabbit-hole in her backyard, things change for the curiouser. She/her. (Alice)

Zuko: The son of Lord Ozai. He’s willing to help Katara out, even if he’s not quite sure how to. He/him. (Evil stepsibling)

Suki: N/a

Yue: The princess of the Northern tribe, focused on becoming the best queen she can be. This means she has to get married, to secure an heir for her kingdom. She/her. (Prince Charming)

Azula: The daughter of Lord Ozai. She’s pretty focused on climbing the political ranks, but something about her father’s treatment of their servant girl doesn’t sit right with her. She/her. (Evil stepsibling)

Mai: The ward of a certain Mr. Zhao, locked in a tower for basically her whole life. She dreams of getting out, but her only access to the outside world is the knives she gets every year as a present. She/her. (Rapunzel)

Ty Lee: A runaway who’s lived many lives, but has always wanted something more. When she meets Mai, a beautiful girl with 70-foot hair, Ty Lee sees a soulmate in her. She/they. (Flynn Rider)

To welcome the spindle’s end

When Katara was a very little girl, her mother told her a very old story. A girl named Ranji (Rangi? It’s been a long time) was cursed to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. She fell into a sleep from which only a kiss could wake her. Many years passed, but she got her kiss in the end. Neither Katara nor her brother could take the story seriously, though. To die from a spindle’s prick? Your skin had to be made of paper. It would never happen to Mama, soft and strong as a cart-horse.

Of course, it wasn’t a spinning wheel that got her in the end. But all the same, she’s gone now, and Katara is all that’s left of the little family. Now, sitting at her own spinning wheel, she half-wishes the curse upon herself.

It’s hot in this house, so hot. That’s how Lord Ozai likes it, with all the fireplaces blazing at once. In December she was grateful for the warmth, but does everything have to be burning in August?

It’s not like she could say anything. She may hate this house, but it’s the only reason she’s not starving in the streets right now.

Katara tries to remember when she was little. She can remember a time when it was never hot like this, a time when she always had enough to eat. A time when she didn’t have to wait hand and foot on a couple of bratty teenagers and their equally bratty father. But she finds that her memories are fading, that her mother’s face is gone. All Katara’s got now is her spinning wheel and the letter that sits in her hand, unwilling to be opened.

The letter is clearly mass-produced, with the letters stamped on from what looks like a typewriter. The seal looks official, which means it’s from the state. But it’s blue and silver, which are the Tribal colors.

Her heart skips a beat. This could mean everything.

To the recipient of this letter:

You are invited to the betrothal ball of Princess Yue of the Northern Tribe. She has requested to marry one of her own people, Northern or Southern; thus, every eligible Tribal maiden or bachelor of age will be sent this invitation. It is your choice whether or not to attend. The ball will take place on the first of February, at the Northern royal palace.

So now, Katara has a choice. She could ignore the invitation, stay here, and nothing would change. She wouldn’t have to make or steal a dress, nor would she have to fake an excuse for being out so late. She would risk nothing.

Or, she could leave in the night for the ball, and risk everything for a chance to return to her home.

It’s a mad choice. But what Katara knows is that she has magic on her side, and she begins to sew a sugarplum-purple dress.
