i spent several hours grappling with how to get my feelings across that didn't sound absurdly and dramatically melancholic but I do think this is kind of a death knell.
TWW was the sword cinematic, and yeah, it was no action-packed memorable event like most other wow cinematics. It doesn't tell us anything new, the big shock value is "oh my god look at Anduin," and that's about it. I think the main reason they were able to get away with that is because it's Anduin, of all people. We watched him grow up and then had to put him down, so to speak.
TWW is, in terms of Warcraft trailers, the second worse behind Midnight, because they rely so heavily on the fact that Blizzard never fully addressed the sword and they went "we're going to do that now, look!' and also we saw that child we had to beat up again and he's disheveled and upset and in need of a hug. The hype of TWW never came from the trailer, it came from Metzen coming out and going "Hey guys, I'm back, guess what I'M in charge of now?" and because of it, everyone really didn't point out the problems with the trailer. (I also don't like the Dragonflight trailer at all but a lot of people do—to me Blizzard hasn't done something good since Shadowlands with their trailers, and even that one is admittedly awkward when you're watching critically, but it at least feels epic).
And the Midnight trailer isn't, like, awful by any means, but it's painfully mid. That's it. Lor'themar is great in it because Gideon Emery puts his entire pussy into everything, but that's all I can say about it. That's not Liadrin. That's not the paladin I know. Liadrin condoned the torturing of a Na'aru to get their powers. She's a powerful, confident woman that gets shit done. Her having a crisis of faith now feels INCREDIBLY stupid and just a plot contrivance. And also SHE JUST SUMMONED AN ARMY OF HUMANS OUT OF THE SUNWELL? OKAY!
The fighting is worse in it too compared to other trailers. I was watching that with a sinking feeling like "oh... that looks incredibly bad for Blizzard..." They've been doing this for over twenty years at this point, it should not be looking that slow and floaty.
I don't like this. It feels bad when Blizzard cannot sell me on an expansion, especially not one I was fully prepared to buy beforehand. I wasn't sold on Dragonflight and that ended its expansion with a Marvel Endgame ass writing. I bought this out of loyalty to Metzen and while I enjoyed the story of 11.2 and parts of 11.0, I can't actually say I've enjoyed this expansion. I was very lukewarm on Earthen, still am, and now we're getting Harronir which Blizzard invented last week and then proceeded to do nothing with them, expecting us to like them. We're getting a druidic troll-elf adjacent race in the Light v. Shadow expansion instead of, I don't know, ethereals?
And, also, about the streamer thing, this is a user error. It's a cold day in hell when I have to hear about the opinions of a crowdfunded quebecer. I don't hear any opinions from any streamer on purpose and live well because of it. I'm not going to define my opinions based on theirs.
