I was pleased to get some writing done for my RWRB car show WIP earlier this week... but am now feeling frustrated about all things car-related due to experiencing a rather dramatic radiator failure in my own car yesterday. Let's hope it's fixable and that I can get back on the road again soon (and finish the story, too).

My words were: begin, soak, hover, cold

Begin

“If you ask me,” Henry begins–but Alex doesn't get to hear the end of his thought, because the kicking kid from the Model B is stampeding toward Henry's El Camino, no parent or legal guardian in sight.

Soak

Despite Alex's best attempt to speedrun his routine this morning, by the time he'd settled in under his pop-up sunshade next to his baby, the crushed ice in his cold brew had been a distant memory. It's relatable. Alex may have grown up in Texas, but even he feels more liquid than solid in this kind of weather.

WIP WHURSDAY

I meant to post yesterday but time got away from me. Thank you for the recent tags, @cha-melodius, @onthewaytosomewhere, and @porcelainmortal!

"Finish your WIPs, Rex," continues. RWRB car show AU continues! I am getting close to the end of this one, I think.

[SNIP UNDER THE SNIP, featuring Alex Claremont-Diaz, king of famous last words]

It had been a dick move on Henry's part, period.

Come to think of it, Alex realizes, finally turning his focus away from the tent roof and back toward the crowd, Henry still hasn't apologized. He's been acting friendly the past few weeks, but he hasn't said “sorry,” or "won't you please excuse my dreadful comportment," or however they say it in England.

Maybe, Alex thinks, he should force Henry's hand.

🍅 for Taco Tuesday, please :)

Thank you kindly, schweet! I took an entire week to finish up this tag game and reply, it's true (and unfortunately very on-brand for me), but luckily tacos are always a good idea. Here is a very very loose interpretation of the 🍅 caregory:

Across the aisle from Alex and one car to the left, Henry looks miserable. Although he seems to have figured out he should wear loose clothing and light colors when it's this hot outside, his face still turns pinker and pinker as the day wears on. He may be Alex's nemesis, but it's hard not to feel a little concerned. Not even Henry deserves to succumb to heatstroke in Naperville. They'd probably have to tow his car. Heaven forbid someone think Alex was responsible for that eyesore.

Alex keeps an eye on him.

🌶️ and/or 🍅 pleeeeease 😘

Thank you, Grace! Here is a little bit of something that qualifies as 🌶 in Alex's opinion:

Henry slides carefully onto the driver's seat, twisting so that his legs – his long, long legs – and feet stay outside the car. He runs his fingers over the smooth leather of the steering wheel. He rests his right hand on the rounded chrome gearshift. He looks back over his left shoulder at Alex.

“This really is a beautiful car, Alex. I'd never had the pleasure of seeing an Avanti up close before; now I understand why people like to call them ‘audacious.’”

Perhaps… 🍅?? (Love the twist on this game!)

Thank you for the tomato and for graciously allowing me dealer's choice! In return, I share with you...

“Shoot,” Alex mutters, and freezes in place like some kind of stunned lizard. Even if his reflexes are strong enough to keep him minding his language, the heat must be shorting out the rest of his brain. Henry stares at him from across the shimmering asphalt like a gorgeous, obnoxious, slightly wilted mirage, and Alex just stares back. He can't look away.

To make things even worse, it seems like Henry takes Alex's unnatural, reptilian stillness as an invitation to stand up and walk across the aisle.

🌮 or 🍅 if you please 😌🤲🏼

With pleasure! Thank you for both the taco and the tomato, I'm going to go with the 🌮 for this one. This whole story is mostly light, summery vibes and Alex finding Henry annoyingly hot, in fact.

“Thank you,” Henry says, nodding as if he didn't notice Alex had rambled off a novel's length of commentary when a Post-It's length would have been enough. “I appreciate the advice.” He's going to get run over by a stroller if he keeps standing in the middle of the aisle. Despite his polite response, he still looks puzzled, too – and more than a little overheated. The pinkness in his cheeks makes him look like he's blushing.

Alex sighs, long-suffering, and takes off his sunglasses.

“Come on. Get over here and sit yourself down in the shade before you keel over.”

WIP TACO TUESDAY TACO HUNT! you're a genius!

was gonna go rogue and send you a car emoji but then I read the fine print!! so here's me following the script like an upstanding citizen: 🍅

You are always welcome to go rogue! Thanks for the tomato, I will be going very slightly rogue myself because this story does not have much in the way of hurt... it does have plenty of Alex thinking that Henry is a jerk, however, so let's focus on that for a moment.

Then it's over. Henry has moved out of Alex's field of vision and is still progressing slowly toward the rear of the line of cars. It's giving Alex a crick in his neck to try to keep watching. There's no reason for him to keep watching, anyway.

When Alex turns his head to face front again and pushes up his sunglasses, he checks the side mirror to make sure it hasn't somehow gotten nudged out of place. All he can see in the reflection is the bed of Henry's ridiculous Chevy, not his ridiculous, floppy blond hair. He uses the back of his wrist to carefully wipe a smudge off the glass and block Henry's car from view entirely.

Happy Fourth of July to Alex. That English asshole is so fucking hot he wants to revolt.
