It's end of May, yall know what that means
Find the Word
Thank you kindly for the tag, @cha-melodius!
I was pleased to get some writing done for my RWRB car show WIP earlier this week... but am now feeling frustrated about all things car-related due to experiencing a rather dramatic radiator failure in my own car yesterday. Let's hope it's fixable and that I can get back on the road again soon (and finish the story, too).
My words were: begin, soak, hover, cold
Begin
“If you ask me,” Henry begins–but Alex doesn't get to hear the end of his thought, because the kicking kid from the Model B is stampeding toward Henry's El Camino, no parent or legal guardian in sight.
Soak
[This word doesn't appear in the story]
Hover
[This word doesn't appear in the story]
Cold
Despite Alex's best attempt to speedrun his routine this morning, by the time he'd settled in under his pop-up sunshade next to his baby, the crushed ice in his cold brew had been a distant memory. It's relatable. Alex may have grown up in Texas, but even he feels more liquid than solid in this kind of weather.
Tagging a few folks who I don't think have played yet, but also inviting anyone reading this to jump in! Find the words I provide in one or several WIPs, and quote a sentence or two that contain them.
Your words are: free, high, shine, blue

1, 8 and 18 for the fic writer ask game, please!
Hello hello and thank you for the asks!
1. What is the crackiest thing you've ever written?
YES YES yes this question is a TREAT. You might think the crackiest thing would be the attempted murder tea vampire story, but you would be wrong!! The crackiest thing I have ever written is Moonlighting, a comedy of errors in which Henry witnesses a bank robbery. It might be the best thing I've ever written. It's one of my personal favorites. I always hope the effect on readers is equivalent to being slapped in the face by a very funny fish.
8. Tell us your shortest and longest titles of all time.
I have several one word titles, it looks like the very shortest is Study – which is fitting, since it's a 100-word drabble. My longest title is Love Like A (Lifelong, Exclusive) Sold-out International Tour.
18. If you have noticed themes emerging in your writing, what are they? What broad themes and topics do you enjoy exploring?
Hauntings, figurative and literal. People expressing love through little gestures and in everyday conversations. Finding humor and joy and absurdity in unexpected places. I love writing dialogue and I think that's pretty obvious in my stories, because they often end up quite dialogue heavy.

13, 16, 20
Thank you kindly for the asks! I love these questions.
13. Congratulations, you've just finished the WIP you've been working on for months! How are you going to celebrate?
Oh, gosh, well. I usually just post it, then put my phone away and take a long, long walk – or I post late at night and then immediately go to bed. I think the only stories I've really taken a moment to jump for joy about finishing have been my longest ones, Common Misconceptions of Ghosting* and All Routes Lead to Love. Both of those felt like milestones in different ways. Finishing any story feels like an achievement, though, so I'm not sure why I don't celebrate more often!

16. Describe your current WIP with just emojis.

20. What's the story behind your pen name?
The bird in my profile pic is a seriema. Not only are they very cute, with great dance moves, they're also related to the enormous carnivorous terror birds of the Cenozoic era! The seriema is definitely not a T-rex... but, well. It looks like it's roaring, too, doesn't it? I love birds 💖

✍️ yet another list of fic writer asks
You all seem to like these, so here is another batch of writer asks! These questions are a little more relaxed than the last two. Followers can send an ask with a number OR you can reblog and answer everything like a Q&A. I always see a lot of “idk if i’m a writer” in the tags for these so let me just say in advance, yes you are and you can play.

When you get a new fic idea, what does that look like in your mind? Does it play out like a film? Do you imagine lines of dialogue or a certain moment? Does a character just sit there staring at you?
If you have noticed themes emerging in your writing, what are they? What broad themes and topics do you enjoy exploring?
It’s a lovely morning in fandom land and a horrible goose is running rampant through your folders. How many WIPs is it going to step on?
What’s the story behind your pen name?
Without getting into any discourse, just thinking as a writer approaching characters, would you ever write about your NOTP? If you did, do you think that would change how you feel about it? (If you’ve done this, how did it go?)
Do you have a fixed writing routine, or do you write when you have time? Is there a time of day when you prefer to write?
What is your #1 distraction when you’re trying to write? If it’s a pet, post a pic
What colors, sights, sounds, textures, etc. inspire you? Do certain environments make you feel more creative than others?

Do you have a routine you run through before you write?
Share a random sentence from a WIP. The less context, the better. Be confusing.
You’re out and about, nowhere near your home, when a fantastic story idea pops into your head! What do you do?
Have you ever actually remembered one of those 3am “I’ll remember it in the morning” ideas?

you've heard of "quiet quitting," now I'd like to introduce you to the next level, The French Work Ethic:
Do exactly what you're paid for and nothing more
Absolutely refuse to be available to contact when you're off the clock
Never prioritize work over your own health, wellbeing, or family because that would be insane, it's just a job.
Have a little glass of wine
Take as long as you feel like for lunch
Deeply understand that work doesn't matter
Make sure your boss your boss knows they're always your second priority ❤️
🗣️ Hey, young Americans:
Old Millennial American speaking here. I need you to adopt this mentality as early as possible and hold to it. The older you get, the harder it is to begin this practice and claw back the extremely unhealthy effects of a workaholic lifestyle. I am speaking from 20 years of experience.
This does not mean having a shitty attitude at work, or not doing your job, or relying on co-workers to carry your water.
This means you do what it says above. It also means not making work and productively your entire personality; not tying your productivity to your value; and not becoming so emotionally enmeshed in your work and workplace so that you are living and dying by what happens there.
Good luck out there. American workplace culture is mostly designed to work you to death. Moving against that tide can be challenging, so having a healthy mindset is important to living a life not consumed by your paid labor.

I meant to post yesterday but time got away from me. Thank you for the recent tags, @cha-melodius, @onthewaytosomewhere, and @porcelainmortal!
"Finish your WIPs, Rex," continues. RWRB car show AU continues! I am getting close to the end of this one, I think.

🍅 for Taco Tuesday, please :)
Thank you kindly, schweet! I took an entire week to finish up this tag game and reply, it's true (and unfortunately very on-brand for me), but luckily tacos are always a good idea. Here is a very very loose interpretation of the 🍅 caregory:
Across the aisle from Alex and one car to the left, Henry looks miserable. Although he seems to have figured out he should wear loose clothing and light colors when it's this hot outside, his face still turns pinker and pinker as the day wears on. He may be Alex's nemesis, but it's hard not to feel a little concerned. Not even Henry deserves to succumb to heatstroke in Naperville. They'd probably have to tow his car. Heaven forbid someone think Alex was responsible for that eyesore.
Alex keeps an eye on him.
🌶️ and/or 🍅 pleeeeease 😘
Thank you, Grace! Here is a little bit of something that qualifies as 🌶 in Alex's opinion:
Henry slides carefully onto the driver's seat, twisting so that his legs – his long, long legs – and feet stay outside the car. He runs his fingers over the smooth leather of the steering wheel. He rests his right hand on the rounded chrome gearshift. He looks back over his left shoulder at Alex.
“This really is a beautiful car, Alex. I'd never had the pleasure of seeing an Avanti up close before; now I understand why people like to call them ‘audacious.’”
