I feel like with A Selkies Home you THINK it’s a YA novel
Until...
1. Torture and pain
2. You find out that all of the MCs are in their twenties
And as a very very nearly twenty year old who still feels 17 and could pass as being from any age between 16 and 22, this whole age thing is relatable. But then I just wonder if my adult MCs are just simply not adulty enough ever. That they act too much like 17yos.
It’s FINE.
Me, suddenly realizing I just FORGOT about a permanent odd fixture on an OCs appearance the last couple of chapters because it doesn’t seem important yet but it IS: *looks up suddenly, eyes wide* f*ck
So. I’m getting quite close to what very well might be / is probably the climax of my novel and. I’m a little scared to write it. Like, will it be good enough? Will it be climactic enough?
But yknow what? It doesn’t matter. Because this is only the first draft. Even if it sucks it will only get better and better in time and in later drafts. So it’s going to be okay and I shouldn’t put off getting to it and writing it.
Is it weird that I am excited to go back and rewrite and edit but I am forcing myself to wait until I’m done draft one
hnnnnnnnnnhhggggggggggggg ughhhhhh I don’t wanna write! But I really should!! The word count! My goal! But I’m just. Struggling today. I don’t wanna. I don’t know how to word the next bit. I don’t know how to transition into it.
I just don’t really want to put in the effort today!! What do I dooo
So, I feel like this is presumptuous and self-aggrandizing, but I’m genuinely really curious...

A Rant About A Selkie’s Home
Jason’s gonna rant about their future plans for ASH now, feel free to reblog if you want to leave a comment or something it’s all good
So! One of my writing dreams, I’d say my main one, is to one day traditionally publish and see my book with my name on it on a bookstore shelf.
Lately, I’ve been having the most fun writing that I’ve maybe ever had writing ASH. The words flow out of me, they excite me, I enjoy them, I actually think they’re good, AND I’m doing it in such a way that I’m not going to burn out. And writeblr has been a big part of me getting to this point, thanks to the support and encouragement and enjoyment you all provide. Thank you!
Now, I could be wrong, but I don’t really think ASH would publish traditionally. Through a big main publishing house with an agent sort of thing. I’m not being pessimistic, I just know that typically if agents like your query letter they will want the first couple of pages or a certain approximate first number of words from the book to see what they think of your writing.
The thing is, though ASH is a somewhat fast paced book, through I actually think I do a decent job on pacing and balancing serious and lighthearted scenes, the first couple of chapters is meeting the main characters, learning what they’re like and where they come from, right before things start happening and changing. But the main MCs don’t all meet each other until chapter five. The main *main* conflict/problem (Morgan’s capture) doesn’t happen until chapter seven. You could argue a different over arching problem for Morgan that basically makes everything happen and results in keeping the crew together comes up in chapter one and seven — Morgan’s sister Adva’s strange injury, which is what makes her make a deal with Lorelai, which is what keeps everyone together, but most of the books directly dealt with conflict is Morgan’s capture.
SO giving an agent the first few pages of my novel only introduces one maybe two not sure of the MCs, and potentially doesn’t introduce the main conflict, depending of if you consider that to be Advas injury or Morgan’s capture or everyone being stuck together.
So I don’t think an agent would like that very much?
I’m thinking / planning on SELF PUBLISHING A Selkies Home as a result! It’ll still be quite some time, I’m only on draft one, but I’ve researched self publishing in depth so yeah!!
So I just realized that if I write 1k words every day for the rest of the month I might be able to finish book one draft one of A Selkie’s Home by the end of November.....
(Cause each chapter is approximately 4k words, give or take, I have six chapters left, meaning that with that approximate chapter word count, I would be done on November 27th if I did 1k/day, which leaves three more days before the end of the month to finish when chapters undoubtedly end up not being that neatly sized..)
