A walk down Rock Street which is part of the Fall River historic district. The houses along here are said to be built in the “Federalist Style.” A one time church is now a doctor’s office. Bottom pic: the lovely Historical Society building which I did not get a chance to visit. It is said here you can see the axe blade that “may” have been used during the murders of Abby and Andrew Borden on August 4th, 1892.

The Book of Life sits on top of the memorial for Matthew Durfee and his wife, Fidelia. Matthew was just 38 when he died but Fidelia lived to be 84. If you check the town’s history you’ll find that the Durfee family was very prominent, going all the back to the Revolutionary War. Not only that, but Lizzie Borden’s stepmother Abby was also a member of the Durfee family. She of course was murdered on August 4th with 17 blows to the back of her head with an axe. (She was also struck in the front, right above her left ear. This made it a total of 18 times she was hit by the axe.)
