He’d escaped…slipped right out from under her, out into the vastness of the Colorado wilderness - the serial killer, the butcher who haunted her dreams was on the run once again, along with dozens…no, hundreds more just like him; Edward Gluskin…as well as countless other dangerous psychopaths had run from the walls of Mount Massive to wreak havoc on the world beyond the asylum like rats fleeing a natural disaster…sliding though the fingers of a pair who sought vengeance in the purest sense.
At first Maggie and Mathias had thought themselves mistaken, had searched the entire facility from top to bottom no less than four times, the truth being driven inescapably home…Eddie Gluskin had fled…and their mission was a failure; they didn’t know how long they had stayed in his workshop, seeking out clues, any hint as to where he could have gone, only to turn up nothing, “How can this…what…what are we supposed to…fuck…fuck!” Maggie cried angrily, slamming her fists down so hard on the table saw the metal bowed and dented, struggling to keep the frustrated tears from escaping her eyes.
Mathias was silent, teeming with quiet rage as his mismatched eyes focused on the mutilated corpses of patients, staged in some perverse efforts to simulate a delivery room, shaking in disgust as he drove his fist through the wall before turning to face his twin, “…this isn’t over, Margaret…not by a long shot…that fucker…we’ve tracked him before…we’ll track him again.” he murmured softly, though his voice trembled with barely contained anger as he approached his sister, placing his bleeding hands over her own wounded digits.
It took a moment for the two to regain any true semblance of composure, their breath ragged as they stood their in silence, unable to find any words to comfort one another, mismatched eyes stinging with tears as her gaze roved over the carnage that filled the space, “You’re right, Mathias…we’ll find him…I swear it…him and others like him…people who’ve destroyed lives, ripped apart families with no regard.” Maggie muttered bitterly, as she allowed her brother to lead her from the space and into the early morning light, both breaking out into a run the moment the rental car loomed into view, “We will not be denied our vengeance…no one like us will ever be born again - we will kill the killers, the child rapists and molesters, the sexual offenders and those who’ve committed violent crimes.” Mathias replied quietly as he slid into the passenger seat as Maggie slid behind the wheel, “Yeah…we’ll hunt them down one by one until Gluskin is back within our grasp…and then…we’ll will end his cycle of bloodshed.’
Three months later, true to their word, The Steins were tailing their fifth heinous criminal, one Gregory Lee Scott - for all outward appearances, a very plain, run of the mill fellow in his late thirties who was seemingly well liked, respectable member of society…while in truth, he was a thrice charged child predator, his well to do parents having paid huge out of court settlements to keep the families of his victims quiet, and lord knows how many others went unaccounted for - even during her observation of him, Maggie witnessed Gregory attempt to lure a small boy to come with him to his car and she had to fight the near uncontrollable urge to take him out right then and there…thankfully the boy’s mother was nearby and called him in for lunch before the deviant had a chance to coax him further and with a rueful sigh, she turned tail and went to meet up with her brother at their usual coffee shop.
“I have the building layout down - where the camera’s are, the air duct network, and the floor plan of the penthouse.” Mathias remarked quietly as she slid into the chair beside him, schematics of the building up on the screen of his laptop, “Good…all that we need now is a way in.” Maggie murmured softly, taking a sip of the iced coffee her brother had purchased for her and raking her fingers back through her bangs, “Way ahead of you - there’s a party this Friday.” Mathias replied evenly, taking a bite of bagel and absentmindedly adjusting his eyepatch, “Open to the public, BYOB…my thoughts are we intermingle with an incoming group, make small talk with some of the party goers…” he trailed off, as he watched his sister’s good eye light up, “…slip off, deal with Scott, return before anyone knows we were gone, get drunk and do ‘the walk of shame’ home the next morning - excellent work.” she finished, nudging her brother with her toe, “Let it never be said that our anal retentive attention to details never yielded positive results.”
Plans set, Mathias closed out the window with the apartment floor plans and shut the laptop, tearing off a section of bagel and pressing it into his sister’s hand, “You okay?” he asked gently, watching her as took a small bite, “...he tried to lure a little boy, Mathias...in broad daylight...that’s how little regard he has.” Maggie mumbled softly, looking visibly upset, something that in and of itself was a rarity and he quickly squeezed his twin’s hand, “...don’t worry, Margaret...only two more days and he’ll never be able to harm so much as one more child.” Mathias murmured softly, catching his sister’s gaze; she nodded mutely and finished the bit of bagel he handed her before rising from her seat, “Come on...we need to plan our disguises for the party.” she muttered, collecting the laptop as Mathias got to his feet, fishing around in his back pocket before tossing a twenty on the table and falling in stride with his twin.
