Okay but IMPORTANT QUESTION! What are the ships? Does Friendo-kun have any relevance except for the bit in the beginning? Protagonist-kun/Antagonist-kun or Antagonist-kun/Shy-kun? Is Token-chan the love interest or is it a new character whose only role is being a possible female love interest that is never confirmed?

What are the ships?

Obviously, Protag-kun has shipping potential and baity scenes with every other male character. 

Does Friendo-kun have any relevance except for the bit in the beginning?

Friendo-kun is one of the competitors, his strength is his bro-like kindness and his weakness is the fact that he wants to support Protag-kun in any way he can, so he ends up opting out of the competition for his sake. Him and Protag-kun are also a popular ship.

Protagonist-kun/Antagonist-kun or Antagonist-kun/Shy-kun?

Protag-kun/Antagonist-kun is the typical love/hate ship that is closer to canon than the other ships, but the fandom has a bit of an aversion to it since it’s ‘abusive’. Antagonist-kun/Shy-kun would be a nice crack ship, but interesting couple dynamics have no place in sports anime bait, so they don’t get a lot of scenes together. Protag-kun/Friendo-kun is the typical childhood friend ship, while Protag-kun/Shy-kun is also heavily baited with Protag-kun bestowing something resembling self-confidence upon Shy-kun.

No, Token-chan is a tomboy who doesn’t get a makeover so she obviously can’t be the love interest. The latter, Loveinterest-chan, is just a girl. Who’s there. And Protag-kun knows her since they were kids and defended her from the bullies or some shit. They don’t get a relationship development, ain’t nobody got time for that. They just end up together in the finale so the straights can watch the show too.
