The Legacy of Doctor Jack Crawford: Pre-War & Post-War
Jack Crawford was many things before the Great War. Canadian, Doctor, Soldier, Celebrity. And one of the founding members of the Enclave.
Though, Jack always seemed to be searching for things. Beyond the stars. Outwards. He wanted to LEARN.
After a 200+ year ice nap, he awoke and aided the Reformist Enclave cells with their endeavours (Within reason).
When things went south for the Remnants, he never once did anything to hide what he was. Who he was. His mother never raised him to be a liar. She'd have been ashamed if he had.
"If your cause is just, you shouldn't have to hide your face." A famous lesson of hers.
Jack is often seen in his uniform when in meetings with either the Institute or New California Republic. The brass in the NCR can't help but respect the level of loyalty and sense of duty he has, viewing his desire to put aside age old tensions between their factions and just help people as admirable.
Though, many have tried to hold him accountable for the actions of every Enclave member. Good or bad. And have failed spectacularly.
Jack's not a monster. He acknowledges that the Enclave did pretty shitty things to the Wasteland. He just refuses to take responsibility for the 'unbelievably stupid fucking blunders' of his colleagues.
In his own words? He's not their keeper at the end of the day. He can only teach them. Guide them. How they choose to proceed afterwards is their own democratic right.
If they choose to do something stupid following being taught the proper way to do it? They're on their own. Best of luck. Enjoy the consequences.
He'd say the same to anyone else. And, if this bothered them? Oh well. It's not his job to police their lives or how to be. Again, he can only educate. And that's where it ends.
He knew people like that before the Great War. The types who attended university for a single year or two, got brainwashed with 'studies' from white knights and apologists. Acted like they knew better about political issues or economic development. Yet, only ever seemed to complain about stuff and protest. Never actually did much else to help alleviate problems.
It's all bullshit to him, man. Sitting on their blogs. In echo chamber mentality. Acting like they're changing the world, when they couldn't even watch a fucking cartoon without having to get in-depth with shit. It's a show. You watch it. Pointless drivel. Not much else to it. It's filler.
Gaslighting folks for exercising their right to have their own beliefs without feeling uncomfortable. 'It's okay if you don't agree with us. That just makes you a fascist and a monster!'. That kind of nonsense. No one respected that Pre-War. It was the tactic of mentally challenged children who didn't like that the world was shit to them.
That's kind of how the Enclave even came to be formed, honestly. People were, quite literally, too stupid to run things without a shadow nudge. Make them think that it was their idea first so that they have to go along with it, or they're stupid.
It's how politicians got elected. They just played on the stupidity of the general population and people knew that they were doing it. Yet, did nothing. Wild.
...Got distracted for a moment there.
Jack typically didn't really care for witch hunts. He liked to hear both sides of the story before he decided who to shoot in the head. Which only makes sense. How can you make an informed decision, if you don't have all of the facts first? Then, you're just the NCR playing pretend democracy. Or the Brotherhood of Steel, assuming that mankind is stupid if it's not part of their cult. Or, even the Legion. They had a whole different thing. A spicy different thing.
He's also an incredibly sarcastic asshole. Shocker. 'Oh no! A member of the Enclave telling a local to fucking bathe regularly in order to stave off health issues. How awful for you. He only existed in a time when logic and reason were super important in society.'
'My god! An Enclave Remnant who does everything in his power to ensure that your people are well fed! He's clearly a supervillain! Shall I do my diabolical laugh now? Or...?'
'You thought the Enclave was evil? Buddy. Have you seen how many NCR troopers casually shit in the bathroom sinks around here? We weren't THAT evil.'
But, yeah. Jack's trying to save the wasteland. One idiot at a time. And people like to whine.
It's a whole theme with the locals, apparently.
