False turkeytail (Stereum ostrea)

These perfect rosettes of false turkeytail are easily distiguished up close since, being a crust fungi, they have a smooth underside, with no pores, unlike true turkeytail. False turkeytail also tends to have far more red and orange tones, in my experience, though these colours are not absent on some specimens of turkeytail.

Stereum ostrea (false turkeytail)

So named because of the resemblance of their upper surface to ‘true turkeytail’ (trametes versicolor), false turkeytail is easily distinguished by its smooth underside - it lacks a pore surface, making it a crust fungi, rather than a polypore.
