Baseball in Falsettos. ⚾♟️

I see a bunch of people talking about "games in Falsettos", but I've never seen anyone talk about the baseball game, even though it is one of the most important steps in Marvin and Whizzer's relationship !!! First, because Marvin hates baseball, and him getting back together with Whizzer during a baseball game is very symbolic, as it represents him giving up his pride for his relationship with Whizzer.

The fact that it's also in the Falsettoland Workshop proves it's not there unintentionally.

I can't stop thinking about This Had Better Come to a Stop from the Falsettoland Workshop recordings... Like, all day, it's all I've been able to think about. It's just such an incredible song. William Finn is just such an incredible writer... To take the song from March of the Falsettos where Marvin is the most (or almost most) problematic, where his desire for everything is destroying his relationships, the song where he is forcing Whizzer into a role he clearly doesn't enjoy... And to make a reprise of it where Marvin is working on his controlling nature and his jealousy! To have Marvin tell himself to control and stop this part of him and not the other people in his life tell him this... To make a song that shows how much Marvin loves Whizzer and how much Marvin is willing to improve himself for Whizzer, it's just so incredible!

And!! The fact that what's keeping Whizzer out is making Marvin spiral is a doctor's appointment, a doctor's appointment Whizzer won't tell Marvin about because he doesn't want Marvin to worry, doesn't want Marvin to think about loosing him so soon... UGH it's incredible!!

It also compliments Another Chess Game SO WELL!! Another reprise from March of the Falsettos that flips the script (literally, Whizzer & Marvin swap lines in the ____ is everything to me part) on Marvin's controlling and unhealthy nature and shows how much he's developed and grown since the first Chess Game... UGH *chef's kiss*!!

I understand why these numbers were cut from Falsettoland (or, at least This Had Better Come to a Stop... Another Chess Game probably could've been worked in), and I love how the final version of Falsettoland presents Whizzer's battle with AIDS as sudden and unexpected, but I feel like it lost so much of Marvin's character growth. In the final version, his development happens off-stage, between March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. But in the workshop, the audience gets to see more of it! Gets to see Marvin intentionally working to better himself for Whizzer. Idk, I just can't stop thinking about that particular song from the Workshop. Thank you William Finn for making such an incredible piece of art.
