Jazziversaries August 25th
Charles Fambrough (bass) - 1950-2011 :: was a Jazz bassist, composer and record producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Fambrough was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers during the early 1980s. He also played Freddie Hubbard, Airto Moreira, and Shirley Scott, among many other.
Keith Tippett (piano) - 1947:: Happy birthday to the British jazz pianist and composer, Keith Tippett. In the late 1960s, he led a sextet featuring Elton Dean on saxophone, Mark Charig on trumpet and Nick Evans on trombone. In the early 1970s, his big band Centipede brought together much of a generation of young British jazz and rock musicians. As well as performing some concerts (limited economically by the size of the band), they recorded one double-album, Septober Energy. Tippett has appeared and recorded in a wide variety of settings, including a duet with Stan Tracey, duets with his wife Julie Tippetts, solo performances, and appeared on three King Crimson Albums.
Pat Martino (guitar) - 1944 :: Many happy returns to the guitarist Pat Martino. He began playing professionally at age 15. Martino played and recorded early in his career with musicians such as Willis Jackson and Eric Kloss. He also worked with many jazz organists, such as Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, Trudy Pitts, Jimmy Smith, Gene Ludwig, Don Patterson, Richard "Groove" Holmes. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Martino made many recordings as a sideman and also under his own name. In 1980, Martino underwent surgery as the result of a nearly fatal brain aneurysm. The surgery left him with amnesia, leaving him, among other things, without some memory of the guitar and his musical career. With the help of friends, computers, and his old recordings, Martino made a recovery, and learned to play the guitar again. Martino's return to music started once again with the 1987 recording The Return. Martino's release "Undeniable: Live at Blues Alley" was released on October 11, 2011 and hit No. 1 on the jazz charts in mid-November. The newest Pat Martino release from HighNote Records "Alone Together" was released on August 14, 2012 and has been receiving rave reviews.
Wayne Shorter (saxophone) - 1933 :: Very happy birthday wishes to one of the legends of jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter! He is generally acknowledged to be jazz's greatest living composer, and many of his compositions have become standards. Shorter's output has earned worldwide recognition, critical praise and various commendations, including multiple Grammy Awards.Shorter first came to wide prominence in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he went on to join Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, and from there he co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. He has recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader.
