Sad to see the passing of another music pioneer: The great Rick Hall who has passed away aged 85. While on assignment for J.Crew in 2011 photographing Billy Reid in Florence, Alabama we took a trip to nearby Muscle Shoals and talked our way into Rick’s office for a chat and impromptu photo session.

soul wouldn't be soul without Aretha. she came into her own as an artist thanks to this encounter with Muscle Shoals (FAME studios).. this is one of my favorite documentaries + i'm so grateful these stories were told before the recent passings of gregg allman + rick hall + now, the queen of soul. she powerfully paved the way for women in music. how strangely fitting that she left us the same day as elvis + robert johnson (the two kings) did.. she'll always live on in these classic records, but there will never be another voice quite like hers.
