December 1: Founding of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth began in 1812 as a group of six women who responded to the call to provide religious education for the children of Catholic families who had migrated to Kentucky from Maryland after the Revolutionary War. Catherine Spalding, originally from Maryland, was elected first superior of the Congregation. The new community followed the rule of St. Vincent de Paul and today are part of the Sisters of Charity Federation.
