Hey Artzy, I don’t to ask, but do you have any tips on how to write a fan class with distinct and diverse personalities? Also, any plans for the future?
When creating the Science Kids, @nerd-chocolate and I just went back and forth with different ideas for the OCs after I drew them and fleshing out Aurore, Mireille, and Jean and thought of what worked and didn’t
We thought a bit about each one’s personalities, hobbies, and family lives, and they just sort of evolved over time
For the Recess Class, it started with us creating the Austins- Clothes, appearances, and headcanons (Hey @aganyan!) became canon
They started off as a bit one-dimensional in the first fic I wrote them in, then I got to giving them some more depth (And tragic-as-hell backstories for A, B, and Q) as I wrote them into more fics to give them some reasoning behind why they’re the way they are
Then I figured I’d put them in a class of their own based on the students from Recess. For the Recess Class, it was pretty easy. I just used the personalities from the show and fleshed them out a bit so I’m not copying and pasting too much. (I’m not saying to do that, but it’s a little fun in my opinion)
-Spinelli, for example is based on… Spinelli. Spinelli from Recess hates anything girly, showed an interest in art in one episode, likes to prove herself, and that’s kind of all that I remember about her.
-Spinelli from the Recess Class doesn’t have an aversion to traditionally feminine hobbies but is still confident in his own masculinity. Like Spinelli from Recess (Shown in only one episode and never mentioned again), he likes chalk art and enjoys ballet
For characters who aren’t used much like Swinger Girl and Upside Down Girl, I just did whatever. I made Lotta somewhat of a daredevil and Kendra as this fun-loving girl who likes to do what she wants
You can also do something like this
Think of a character from a show you like, come up with three or more words you immediately think of for them, then turn them into someone else
Izuku: Nerd, attentive, determined, self-sacrificing
Isaac: A studious boy (Possible minority) aiming to prove everyone who said he’d never make it wrong. He’s a bit of a scatterbrain, though, and often has to stick reminders for himself everywhere, even on himself. He’s willing to help anyone with late night study sessions as the cost of his own sleep schedule
Courage the Cowardly Dog: Skittish, bold, innovative
Carlton: An incredibly anxious young man who lives in a dangerous neighborhood where he looks after his grandmother and grandfather. He goes absolutely feral when his family is threatened, sort of fight of flight turned up to eleven. Maybe he’s dealing with gangs or some otherworldly stuff summoned by an enemy from his past back when he still lived with his parents who have been missing for years now
… At least that’s my way of doing it
