Review the raptor squad in the webcomic "Manly Guys Doing Manly Things" please? They are a gag BUT the gag is making fun of movie monster dinosaur depictions. They are featured on Jun 29 2015 and Nov 16 2015 and also appear on Jul 19, Aug 17, Nov 23, Nov 29, Dec 14 of 2015 and Jan 11, April 3 of 2016. Read from Jun 1 2015 if you want some (negligible) context.
For those unfamiliar, “Manly Guys Doing Manly Things” is a fantastic webcomic by @coelasquid, a professional artist, animator, and muscleman enthusiast. It’s one of my favorite webcomics, particularly for the way it smashes audience expectations - usually in the realm of gender roles, but its depictions of raptor dinosaurs are equally as unexpected.
Coelasquid frequently blogs about her pet fancy pigeons, which are a clear inspiration for these fluffy, brightly colored animals. In fact, the noises they make are directly taken from pigeons!
Let me be frank: These things are so adorable. Not only that, but they’re extremely plausible from a biological perspective, defying the tropes of scaliness and gigantism that so often plague media depictions of raptors. While the bright colors aren’t necessarily biologically accurate, I think I can overlook that, given how impossibly cute they are. (Also, while this might not have been intended, they do resemble what domesticated raptors might look like - raptors that were bred to have unusual appearances, perhaps for exhibition purposes. “Fancy raptors”, if you will.)
