i miss ur daemon era. can’t believe you’re just over the series

Hello, anon. I’m sure this wasn’t meant rudely, but I will admit that this did sort of deflate me a bit when I first read it.

I’m not ‘over’ the series. That implies I’m not going to return to it ever. I know I will, because I want to. That’s why I do this. That’s why anyone who writes fanfiction or creates fan art or makes any kind of fandom content does any of it—for fun. We aren’t paid. Because we don’t get anything material from it—none of the essentials needed to feed ourselves, clothe ourselves, put a roof over our heads—there’s an implicit assumption that those consuming said content do not come to demand or even expect said content from specific creators. Our continued presence in fandom spaces relies on our motivation to do so, and comments like this—whether intended to achieve such or not—don’t increase motivation. If anything, they make us wonder what the point of participating in fandom is. If you are getting something for free, you cannot disrespect those making the thing you are consuming.

I stepped away from the fandom because much of the community on here grew too toxic for me to associate positive feelings with, and as such my anxiety extended to the universe in which the show takes place. That is, the fandom affected my interest in the show. Rather than force myself to continue writing to fill a quota—and then produce work that wasn’t as good as what I could create in a better headspace—I’ve taken a step back to try and develop interest in the show, in writing, and in fandom again. Writing for a different series is helping me on that journey.

Again, I’m going with the assumption that you were simply venting rather than deliberately trying to incite a negative emotion in me. I hope my response can encourage you to remember that messages of this nature aren’t going to incentivise me, or people like me, to produce more of what you want.

Possibly harmful things y’all need to be careful of when writing sanders sides characters (that isn’t to say you can’t write them, but be careful with how you do)

Trans Janus - making the “liar” trans? Not a great idea if he’s the only character you ever write as trans.

Soft Virgil - not all soft Virgil is bad, but you do have to be mindful of how you write it, don’t make Virgil like a baby or a child (unless they’re literally a child in the writing you’re doing)

Aromantic Remus - there’s plenty of lovely aro Remus content, I’m personally an arospec Remus kinnie so it does pop up in my writing, but again, it’s about how you write it. Please be careful that you’re not stepping into the category of “Remus can’t love at all” esp since he’s intrusive thoughts and that can easily demonize the subject

Autistic Logan - god there’s so many fucking stereotypes you have to avoid to do autistic Logan, and it’s great to have autistic Logan for projection, but y’all gotta be careful, avoid “autistic people are all extremely smart” “autistic people can’t experience emotion” just check yourself with the stereotypes - there’s def a lot of reasons lo could be autistic, just be careful with how you write it

Aromantic Logan / Asexual Logan - just don’t make Logan aro/ace because “Logan doesn’t have emotions emotionless robot” once again, don’t add to the stereotype that aromantic people don’t experience love at all or make him completely emotionless

Logan with OCD - as someone who is fairly certain they have OCD, this one sometimes bothers me, because this idea of “OCD is just people who are neat” HAS TO GO. please be careful about that.

Generally marginalized groups should not always be your antagonists. Not everyone sees Janus as an antagonist, of course, but. Just be careful of it.

Oh yeah also don’t tag your drawings as BLM even if they’re in support of the cause and don’t tag your Remus content as intrusive thoughts (you can use intrusive thot if you want). It clogs up the tags for other people.

Usually you can break these all being stereotypes by adding another character that is in that group too. For example, making not only Remus aromantic, but making Roman aromantic too.

But please be mindful. Write the characters you want, continue to project (esp if it’s a coping mechanism!!!), but just be careful of the ideas that you’re putting out there!!

I was explaining to my husband how badly they are treating Logan Huntzburger on The Good Wife. He reminded me that’s not his name. I said, Oh yeah, he’s Cary Agos and his actor name is Matt Czuchry. He said, You mean his real name? Needless to say, I can’t wait for the real Matt to play Logan again. But I agree he was great on The Good Wife. I really felt like we watched him grow as an actor on here. And I hope he gets a chance to shine on GG and other great projects in the future.

Thinking about it I think "He's not Will Gardner" in my book is a compliment (or that's how I want to interpret because honestly they've completely sucked with Cary's character). I know Diane was saying this trying to dissmis him as partner and as lawyer but I don't think there's just one right way to be a good lawyer and Cary is just not the Will Gardner type. He's not a fully commited shark. Will basically had fun with all those schemings and mutual backstabbings, was on his element even with people like David Lee and Howard Lyman. Cary is looking for something else and for someone else. He needs people who he can trust and trust him (that's why I think he kept asking Alicia to come back because he missed their partneship which somewhat became also a friendship and that's why he decided to quit because even Alicia became someone he couldn't trust anymore). He needs a firm which is more like a family than like a ring where the more macchiavellian one wins. So maybe a little firm (like the one he wanted to create with Alicia) but more friendly. So I get why he had enough of those  people (because he'll never be one of them) and I've enough of them me too. Too bad they didn't explore that thing in the right way but just like another rushed "Screw Cary over".

I feel like the all female firm was supposed to be some feminist arc (because that’s who Diane has always been), but there’s nothing feminist about backstabbing a male name partner who didn’t actually do anything to be pushed out of the firm? Cary deserves to finally be happy. Whatever that means. Though I do hope he figuratively burns them all to the ground.

Cary didn't start off straight-laced. He was cutthroat and ageist. Remember when he slept with his old law school friend and then used information she'd spilled to him in bed to win a case that got her fired? Yeah, neither did I, but I'm re-watching the whole series (and oh my god, for anyone who read my recaps back then, apologies for them being so late and LONG). I loved the image of Cary loosening his tie to walk out the door, apparently stealing his company laptop. If only we had enough episodes left to see Cary go Mr. Robot on Lockhart whatever-the-name-the-firm-is-now. But if that's the last time we see him, man, is that weak ending for a character and actor who deserve better. What strikes me about Cary deciding to quit — besides the fact that the show has wasted that character ever since Archie Panjabi left and I'm glad for Matt Czuchry that he can be free to just Logan the sh** out of the Gilmore Girls reunion — is that it doesn't feel like defeat so much as a resolution to stop pretending. Cary looks blue blood, but the sense I've always gotten was that he doesn't come from much. That's why losing the junior associate position in S1 was so devastating. He had superior work ethic and work product and in the end the only currency available to him proved useless. And that's what made his almost going to jail so sad. Yes, he had the friendship of Kalinda and Alicia, and Chicago's finest lawyers working on his behalf, but again those felt hard-won and likely to disappear a year after conviction. (Not Kalinda, tho. Carylinda 4eva!) At heart, he's always been simpler than the gray areas of law and morality employed at that firm, and now he's just going back to roots he had before we even met him. Maybe he can start that general store in the country that Charlie on 'Girls' will never get to.
