Everyone keeps talking about comfort characters but like I can only find characters that I want to give comfort to. Is that normal? Is there a term for this? I'm too grandma to know.
Annoying post about Oz
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Oz had been aired in these years and not twenty years ago.
I watched Oz with more than fifteen years of delay (after three tragic failed attempts: the first time the pilot had shocked me, the other two I had fallen asleep watching it) and I went to look for the fandom on livejournal and on yahoo groups. I was lucky because even if with some difficulty, many sites were no longer active and now non-existent, I found a lot of interesting material even in the absence of a real active fandom but I always wondered if Oz would have been successful now.
C’mon, it had a super romantic ship slash canon, a lot of naked men in the shower (with ass like Meloni’s ass), trying to kill each other and make alliances. A cast that was genuinely friendly and that has always spoken with absolute joy with the fans. Oz has a lot of features that could please tumblr.
But at the same time I wonder if one of Oz's strengths was his freedom, not having been examined under a microscope. I wonder if it would be possible to approach those characters with the same lightness "pre-fandom / tumblr / social justice". Pre-internet in some way. Because Oz was a drama, it had strong extremes episodes and very strong themes (I cried a lot in a couple of scenes) but he always had a great irony, Tom always managed to write a series that had its own lightness. Could I have laughed with a character like Schillinger?Rooting for a ship formed by a alcholic who killed a kid (accidentally!) and a serial killer (and rapist)? Because I did it, and it was fun. Would there be controversy over the lack of politically correct? Because Tom and Lee had written an article in a newspaper about possible Oz spin-offs and in one they killed all the characters of Friends and in another (if I remember correctly) the prisoners raped Ben Affleck to make him stop making films. Chris and Lee would have answered with the same lightness to the questions of fans about erections during their scenes together? Would they would kiss at the GLAAD in the same way if there were dozens of gifset after ten minutes and people ready to take them very seriously? We would have killed everything I love?
(I miss Oz, it was a fucking joy)
