“Welcome to Haven!” || Prologue ||
After months of wait, a week of preparing, and five and a half days of oceanic travel, here you are: By the corner of your vision, from the balcony of the cruise ship, you finally get a glimpse at the promised, so awaited, the very pinnacle of human discovery and wonder: The Harumi Islands. From the first sight and beyond, the islands are almost too stereotypical in its presentation: It’s almost like the very dictionary-definition of a true tropical paradise -- filled with flora of various natures, perfumes and colors -- beaches with waters so crystalline, you can see the rocky bottom, ten to twenty meters below, permeated with sea-life from all shapes and sizes -- mountains and valleys so well sculpted it’s almost hard to believe they weren’t made by the hands of a very skilled artisan. It makes the Caribbean look pitiful in comparison. Aside from its natural beauty, however, what’s immediate to grasp your attention, and also of all the hundred or so students that traveled alongside you in the “S.S. Perseus Salum” cruise ship, was none other than a building, of all things. One proudly-standing monolithic skyscraper by the other half of the island, half-covered by one of the sides of a mountain. Yes, as your guide happily answered: That is indeed the main building that composes the one and only, Haven Hotel.

Decorated left and right by exotic pathways designs, and its daring architecture, the main building is truly a sigh to behold; The guide, to which you didn’t quite grasp the name, proceeds to lead your group through the marmoreal lanes embedded into the hotel grounds that proceeded to lead your group, alongside your guide towards the main entrance to the building. You walk through a field of cherry trees, shaping the pathway around the artificial lake in front of the main building, easily over a few tens of thousands square meters, if not more. It’s truly gargantuan. It pairs well with the Hotel itself, now that you’ve looked at it; Eventually, after a good ten minutes of walking and hearing your guide describe the scenery around you, you climb a small set of marble stairs, and finally, you happen to find yourself face to face to a gigantic shiny glass door leading to the main lounge.
You’ve never thought a room was able to single-handedly steal your breath away, but it seems that, clearly, this one was an exception; A true quintessence of modern architecture: Framed through a mixture of marble, glass and small iridescent metals detailing, this gigantic lobby stood in easily over three thousand square meters total; At your immediate right, what looks like a very sumptuous restaurant, beaming with a pink, reddish light from its interior. At the far end of the room, by the left, you see a living room of sorts, by two metal and glass pillars, holding the area together: A handful of very comfy-looking couches, a few touchscreen monitors by the sides, a few desks with next-generation tablets stacked upon each other -- overall, what looks like a very comfortable area to just sit and relax for a bit. Right ahead, you face what appears to be the elevator lobby, filled to the brim with glass-doored escalators, about four by each side, eight total -- probably unnecessary, but you can’t tell for sure. To your left, you see a couple of closed entrances and hallways, leading to somewhere your eyes can’t quite reach. The only constant you’re able to distinguish is that nothing in this room is unprepossessing: Everything your eye touches upon is commendable, from handcrafted glass doors to the gigantic, perfectly framed windows, everything in this room was “sui generis”, unique;
As the rest of your group follows your steps, you only hear gasps and sharp exhales: You look over your shoulder to see these dozen or so dumbfounded faces, gazing their surroundings in awe; A few seconds pass and your guide steps forth, smiling warmly towards the small crowd beginning to form amidst the main lounge, struggling to keep their spirits under proper supervision, as some start wandering off to arbitrary directions:
”Students of Hope’s Peak Academy, please, stay near, the tour isn’t over yet!”
The guide, a black-haired, blue-eyed male a bit over his twenties, dressed in formal attire, manages to retain the smile stamped onto his face while gesturing the students to keep proximity to him. Some of which who listen, some of which who outright don’t; Who would’ve guessed the students from the most praised school on Earth would have such bad manners? As the students begin gathering back together, the man gestures for silence.
“Can I have the word, please?”, he pleads, as some begin wondering back.
“Good, good, fantastic -- Well, you sure are excited!”, the guide says, gesturing for the remaining students to gather around him. “But I’ll ask of you for just a few more minutes of your time, just a few more! I’ll present you to your rooms, and after you’re settled, we all should meet our patron! Yes indeed! The CEO of Haven Enterprises himself is here to greet all of you in his proudest, most daunting project. Mister J-”
As in an instant, before your guide could finish his monologue -- everything went silent.
Everything around you freezes, like a perfect picture, painted in front of your eyes in a fraction of a second. The airs grows colder, more morbid. Not a single whisper permeates the room. The sound of footsteps and chatter previously growing more and more prominent by the minute, ceased. The air grows static. You turn around, looking for answers, very quickly noticing: You’re alone. All the students behind you, vanished. No trace of their existence left behind. No clothes, no blood, no footprints. Nothing.
That gorgeous, peaceful scenery around you shifts-- blackened and befouled, as a thick, dark mist completely encompasses the room in the blink of an eye, as if the essence of the penumbra that daily encompasses the planet focused solely on that room alone -- on you; You now find yourself unable to move, obligated to watch this faint, but terrifying silhouette, alongside these dozen or so flashing colors, shift in and out of your vision sporadically. The figure doesn’t appear alive, its present is cold as the air around it, just as “dead”. Drawing suspicion to that assumption, however, is the bestial eye by one of the sides of its “face” -- a glowing red dot floating upon the ocean of darkness surrounding it. It glances back at you -- not once avoiding its gaze; After about thirty neverending seconds of terror, you black out.
You feel a cold, flat sensation on your cheek -- as you start opening your eyes, you’re quick to realize that, in fact, you’re now lying on the floor of the very lounge you were standing on... Only now, it’s... Much dimmer-lighted. Immediately, by the center of the room, a big television screen catches your attention. It displays a very bland white text, reading: “Welcome to Haven”. That definitely wasn’t there before. Taking the time to look at it, it seems to be suspended about five to six meters above ground by a handful of cables coming from the ceiling… It... Doesn’t look very safe.
As your vision begins adjusting to the environment around you, it very rapidly becomes apparent that you aren’t alone anymore. A few dozen other unconscious bodies also lie by your sides, some beginning to regain their senses right as you do. You can’t tell how much time has passed. Your bag, gone, and none other appears to be in the immediate vicinity. The only things with you are your clothes, shoes, accessories, but -- everything else appears missing. The heartbeats of those now waking up around you start speeding up. Reactions start sprouting from every direction. You can almost touch the despair starting to dissipate into the air.

Beyond Despair’s Bounds 2 is the sequel to the original Beyond Despair’s Bounds. It is a submission-based original character roleplay that takes elements of Dangan Ronpa and adds twists and spins to the formula. Mechanics emphasize investigation, as the students that find themselves in the ancient Ryuuko Castle must figure out the mystery of why they are there and escape, before it’s too late.
