**sigh** I forgot that the reason I stopped reading fanfiction (aside from my Goodreads goals, lol) was because it was so hard to find the right balance I’m looking for.

If anyone has any Severus/Hermione fic recs where Ron isn’t an asshole, let me know. Bonus points if it’s also Ron/Neville or Ron/Viktor, which are pairings I really enjoy.

PSA - FIC LOCATING HELP NEEDED

Hi everyone,

So, despite my best efforts, I’ve lost my oldest posted fanfic. I was planning on moving them to Ao3 but hadn’t gotten to it and now harrypotterfanfiction.com is gone. I tried the wayback machine and only the title pages were crawled. I’m so upset, I may have the original files, but they are all on old computers/flash drives with various levels of accessibility and maybe functionality at my parents.

This is a long shot, but if you read stories I posted to harrypotterfanfiction.com (or net back in the day) and happened to save them/have found them posted online elsewhere, please let me know.

So, I come to the Snapedom from an interesting place.

Around the time Deathly Hallows came out, I’d been very active in the HP fandom for several years at that point. I didn’t start out loving Snape, but that was around the time it started, since I know I argued in support of him during The Great Snape Debate Borders held at the book release party (who but such an accomplished Occlumense could hide the truth from Voldemort?). For a period of several years, I was really into Snape and I started writing a (massive) fic about him. I am sure I engaged in some discourse (though he wasn’t quite as hated in those days, at least once DH came out, before that people were pissed about Dumbledore). 

But then life goes on, I got involved in other fandoms. I’d revisit it from time to time, but not to the same degree.

In the past year or so, I’ve come back to the Harry Potter fandom in general, and to my joy have found the Snapedom. I have grown a lot in the last decade, and my understanding of the character has evolved as well. There are parts of the text that I interpreted TOTALLY differently 12 years ago that I recognize now as being a bad reading. At the same time, I am finding so much more nuance and depth than I every picked up on back then. I’m falling in love with this all over again for totally different reasons and I am so here for this.

It’s so nice to have something to write headcannons about again. As annoying as discourse can get, I really love engaging with it, and I love that there’s other people out there who share that love. I also enjoy the fluff, because every fandom needs a good balance. So thank you, Snapedom.

Hey, so it’s been a while.

I don’t know why I’ve been avoiding tumblr since the election (actually, it was more when my old computer died, then the election happened), but it just kind of happened. I’ve been finding it so hard to connect with fandom things. I haven’t written in ages and that kills me. But I randomly ended up back here today in a round about way and I’ve really missed it. Also it’s nice to be hearing some different perspectives from those from the people I know irl, I’ve been on facebook WAAAAAAY too much these past few months.

Also, I’ve been cross stitching this massive dog picture for my boss who is retiring in December, and I have to put my ass in gear if I am going to finish in time. Also grad school. Which will be done around the same time! So yay!

So I might be around a little more. Or I might not. But I’ve been rewatching Glee and it’s reminded me of that community, and while those glory days are gone, it’s nice to reconnect to that time in my life, because let’s face it, it was pretty fucking awesome.

I always see those “reblog don’t just like!” posts going around. And I get it, and yeah, I think part of the problem is that most people are more used to just liking stuff rather than sharing because of other platforms. And as a systemic issue, I get it.

But also as someone who never really got much traction in my fandoms aside from the random post that somehow took off? I also just don’t get it. Do I love getting feedback on content I create? Of course. Does it suck if it doesn’t get traction? Totally. But I got to a point where I had to decide that I was creating content for me or else I would have left fandom a long time ago. And the fact of the matter is that I love engaging in fandom. And even though I haven’t really had a large reach, I’ve gotten some wonderful feedback over the years that has felt so amazing. 

I get that we all want to share out work and be acknowledged for it. But I just don’t want to be a “content creator”. I’m a creator. If it doesn’t fit within the confines of the social media platform, that’s fine. I’ll still be here creating.

Omfg people dissing people who read fanfic are WILD!

Like, the assumption that an avid fic reader never reads published books? Or like, that just because a book is published it's somehow better?

I mean, I go in waves, and right now I'm reading more published stuff than fanwork. But there were times that I read mostly fic for pleasure because I read so much other stuff for school.

Fanfiction isn't some magical superior thing, but it's not trivial either.

Can this phase of modern fandom end already? I miss when people didn't live to suck the life from anything that brings joy. (I know we've had our shit in the day but UGH)

I really honestly hope that we as a society and internet culture in particular can get beyond call out culture and find a happy place where respecting people and their identities and experiences is the norm but also people can explore and make mistakes. People can have different perspectives and not draw the same conclusions but still be kind.

I’ve gotten into so many disagreements lately with people with whom I probably agree on 95% of things on. But our 5% disagreement has led to them becoming increasingly hostile, which bugs me to no end. I’m happy to engage in productive dialog, but when something just unravels, it’s not healthy. I’m so drained from these interactions.

I’m not saying that we should let racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/antisemitic things get a pass. But we have to get to a place where we can see nuance. We should be able to respect each other without groupthink. We should be able to agree on basic humanity so that we can disagree about other things.

It’s quite a bizarre experience right now not being part of either of the fandoms that are having their big moments right now. 

Also it’s really interesting because it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a fandom where spoilers were a real issue, and it’s fascinating to see how the response to that has changed over the years. (GH doesn’t count since it’s almost impossible to avoid spoilers by being active online, it plays by it’s own rules. Interestingly, learning all of those spoilers doesn’t make the show less fun to watch, though I would like to be surprised more.)
