Vampire Fact Introduction - Coming 2021
What’s this? 2021 is coming up, and it’s the start of something new! An all-new series of monster facts - you’re familiar with my werewolf facts...
Now it’s time for vampire facts, with a new fact every other Friday in 2021! (Vampire facts masterlist coming soon, after the facts start going up!)
Or, should I say, Fangday. Yeah, okay, it’s awful. I couldn’t think of a good day to post them, okay? More on the irony of me calling this fangday (and it isn’t just because werewolves have much bigger fangs) later, when I cover how vampires in folklore didn’t really have fangs, on average.
Oh, there’s so much to say! It’s honestly quite ridiculous. I will say, I am a werewolf scholar at heart, but I’m not one of those either/or people. I also love vampires (just not nearly as much) and plenty of other monsters.
Studying werewolves kind of came hand in hand with studying vampires, not only because I’m interested in both, but because pop culture has decided that the two often go together today. Likewise, I study all other kinds of folklore and mythology. I am not just interested in the more localized or specific legends about things like certain kinds of monsters - I also have studied extensively multiple creation myths and pantheons of many different gods across the world.
Oh, and dragons. Maybe there will be dragon facts someday, too. Another year, maybe? That’s far in the future - for now, vampires!
Studying vampire legends is an incredibly tricky prospect, much more so than werewolves, actually. Why? That’ll be covered in more detail later, but short version is, there is a fairly clear cut idea of what constitutes a werewolf (especially if you ask me), so while the search for legends that fit these parameters is a long and difficult and very involved one, you still know what you’re looking for.
With vampires, however, we will be starting with the etymology of the term “vampire” when these facts begin, because... well, it’s hard to nail down - or put stakes in, if you will - what exactly is and isn’t a vampire legend, because vampires have, possibly even more than werewolves, altered incredibly over the course of their transition from folklore to popular culture - and yet, in some ways, they also haven’t as much as one might think.
This, of course, makes it a challenge, and I do love a challenge. For many years, I’ve been studying vampire legends and reading myriad books from various time periods on assorted vampire legends and things scholars aren’t sure if they should classify as vampire legends.
Over the course of many vampire facts, I will introduce you to the incredible variety of vampiric creatures that wander the night (and sometimes during the day!), their motivations, appearances, powers and abilities, their many different names and places of origin...
So tell your friends, tell your family, and don’t give strangers permission to cross the threshold, because in 2021, the vampires are coming out! I’m so very excited to start sharing my knowledge of these other children of the night with you. See you soon!
Please note that werewolf facts will also resume in 2021, but on a new schedule (more on that later), because I am building up to collecting my written facts and finally doing something I’ve always dreamed of doing - publishing my very own scholarly sourcebook for werewolf folklore. More on that later, too!
