Josephine was good, but so was Varric.  Other people might have been fooled by the half dozen reports and requests, but Varric knew that the real reason she was coming to him was her gaatlok of a closer.

“Oh, and,” she said, drawing a folded piece of paper from within her stack, like an afterthought, “I thought this would interest you.”

She put the paper on his table.  He should have known when she came to see him so late there’d be some sensitive information to share.  Even Skyhold’s great hall emptied after a certain hour.  Varric leaned onto his elbows, looming over the paper.

“As it happens,” Josephine said, “the Inquisitor is a distant relative of your friend Hawke.”

She drew her finger across the paper, between “Leandra Amell” and “Gregory Trevelyan”.  Varric smirked.  “This is distant to you now, Ruffles?  They’re practically siblings.”

“I didn’t want to make too much of it,” Josephine said airily.  “I was unsure how Ser Hawke would react to us using her name in any way.  I thought you might offer some insight in that area.”

“Hawke doesn’t care much what people do with her name, honestly.”  He was looking the paper.  On the Amell side, he noted the hasty way Warden-Commander Desdemona Amell had been added below her mother’s name.  Leadra’s children and husband had had similar treatment.  After letting his eyes settle for a while on Marian, he turned to the Trevelyans, and couldn’t help the cold feeling that grew in his stomach.  It was hard to look at those names and not remember the things Raspberry had told him.  He looked up at Josephine.

“Other people might take issue, however.”

“It’s...a pity,” Josephine said.  “There is much the Inquisition could gain if Lady Trevelyan was more willing to let us use her name.”

At those words, Varric remembered two things:

“He doesn’t put everything in the books, you know,” Hawke had said on the road to Adamant.  The amused smile she’d tossed his way made Varric’s heart ache.  “He knows how to keep other people’s secrets even better than his own.”

Raspberry hummed.  “Have I finally met someone I can trust with my secrets?”

Hawke let herself fall over to lean against Varric, the side of her head resting on the top of his.  “Definitely.  But don’t tell him I said that.  He’d never let me live it down.”--

--“Family’s just a thing that fucks you up, you know?” Juniper had said over the only cheap wine in Halamshiral, the night they’d ended a war.  “No matter what I do on my own, they’ve marked me for life.  I can give up the names they gave me, I can give up the people, but they still…”  They trailed off, eyes finding the dawn creeping up outside the window.

“You can’t pick the family who starts you off, Raspberry, that’s true.”  Varric emptied the bottle into their glass.  “But you do get to choose the family who keeps you going.”

They looked back at him, and their scarred smile was back where it should be.  “And I still wound up with you people.  I’ve got all the bad luck.”

Varric laughed so loud that Sera, splayed across the Inquisitor’s lap, almost woke up.

“Ruffles, you love your family, right?”

Josephine blinked.  “Of course,” she said, “they mean the world to me.”

“And they love you too, don’t they?” he pressed, giving her a harder stare than he let people get used to.  “They’d do anything for you, and you’d do anything for them?”

Josephine allowed for a silence before she said “Yes, Varric.  Everything I do is for them.”

“Then, Ambassador, you are a very lucky lady.”

“I see,” she said quietly.  She looked down thoughtfully at the lineage that, Varric suspected, she had had to personally put all the mages back onto.

“Easy to forget that each of these names is a person, sometimes, huh Ruffles?”

She met his eyes and graced him with an honestly embarrassed smile.  “It’s important to be reminded, as often as possible.”

“That’s a service I’m more than happy to provide.”

She figures out he can’t read early on and starts helping him learn and then she goes to the Circle? And he learns to read and write by being her pen pal?

8. who do they hate the most, and do they have an arch-nemesis?

On any given day that you ask Desdemona this, her answer would vary between Knight Commander Gregoir, Cullen, any of a large number of templars, Irving on bad days, and some shadowy idea in her head of the Crows who put Zevran through everything. Mostly she tries not to think about any of them. Marian most hates Meredith, with some extra juice saved for the freak who killed her mother. Now she's too busy trying to make up for all her own mistakes so really consider anyone in particular her nemesis. Juniper, like Desdemona, most hates a long line of anonymous templars she knew in the Circle. So far, she's managed to defeat her nemeses...watch this space maybe.

18. do they have any irrational fears?

Desdemona, perhaps understandably, can have bouts of claustrophobia. She very much dislikes any way feeling contained. Marian is pretty blithe about your standard irrational fears, adept at rolling with the punches. Juniper is afraid of the dark (this, too, is a trauma response).

24. what languages can they speak?

They all speak Common, or whatever. Desdemona learns Antivan from Zevran, and Marian picks up more than a little bit of Elvhen from Merrill. Juniper doesn't really speak anything else but they DO know a lot of dwarven swears from the three dwarf servants their family employed when they were growing up.
