Household 32 - Genevive is close with her family

Genevive's scandal hadn't been the cause of her father's heart attack, but it certainly hadn't helped his recovery. Her mother was very angry about the whole thing.

"You should have told me!" Faraday argued every time they talked on the phone.

Genevive was pretty sure her mother was angrier about being embarrassed by Genevive's behaviour than anything else.

At least her siblings were all still on her side.

"You should have told Mom," Gethan did say, but only because he felt their mother would have been able to do more to mitigate damage if she had known sooner.

When Gethan said it, she could admit he had a point, but not when she spoke to her mother.

At least Frederick and Fayna, her triplets, had forgiven her. It was most surprising from Fayna - after all Michael had been her boyfriend at the time - but Fayna had laughed and only said she wished she had children too, that she wanted dozens of them and they could live in an artist commune. Fayna had been a bit odd lately, but at least she wasn't mad at Genevive.

While most things were truly looking up for Matthew, there was one fly in the ointment as they expression went.

“Hello Faraday. How is Gaellen doing?” Matthew greeted the head of the local SCIA. She had not neglected her duties at all since the death of her son, Garrick, and her husband’s heart attack. Still, he could not imagine what she was going through.

“He’s resting. Getting back his strength, slowly.”

Matthew insisted they have a meal. He suspected that Faraday wasn’t doing enough to take care of herself.

“Still no word on Mary Anne. She took the Special V, cleared out her accounts, and then disappeared.” Faraday kept Matthew informed. “It happens with many victims of the drug. The thing that makes the Far Village incident so strange is that there were so many in one night, and that there were deaths.”

“It makes no sense. We’ve never heard of anyone dying when they began taking the drug, only when they took the antidote.” While Faraday appeared quite calm as she spoke, Matthew knew that the puzzle was getting to her. 

“Whatever actions, need to be taken, whoever’s collaboration you need in Huntsville to ensure something similar cannot happen her, you will have my full support, and the mayor’s.” 

“Let’s head into the office,” Faraday suggested.

“Normally the police would investigate. The ex-husband is the most obvious suspect, but we know exactly where Felix was. Gaellen would have been with him if it wasn’t his son marrying Felix’s ex.” Matthew noticed that Faraday never could bring herself to say Garrick’s name.

“Special V is a scourge. We have been too lax in stopping it’s spread in Ashford City. As The Law, you and the Mayor must grant me, the police and the army to take whatever actions are needed to rid us of the V-Club and to attempt to cure any addicts, no matter the cost.”

“Absolutely, Faraday. Whatever the cost. Arrest anyone associated. Confine any addicts until they can be cured. Use your own resources, and the police and army will be empowered to offer you support.”

The Islands were truly the perfect place for romance.

Whether that love was being rekindled,

Or whether it was still in the blushes of youth.

Hunter and Delilah were allowed a certain amount of intimacy, but not enough privacy for things to get too far. 

Margery and Justin went on a date together for the first time since they had begun university. 

Justin gave Margery all the space she wanted and needed. He was prepared to wait.

“How was your date with Justin?” Faraday asked her that evening.

“It wasn’t a real date,” Margery replied.

“My mistake.”

But it had been so close to being a date, and Margery could truly see a new future with Justin. If only she could reach out to take it.

By the time it had been a year since Finn and Margery had separated, and half as long since the divorce was finalized, a sense of normalcy was found at the Lawsons. Still, it was never far from anyone’s mind.

“I hear someone got the nomination,” Faraday congratulated Charlotte, who would now have to start planning her campaign. 

“Yes, the polls show that I am in an excellent position to win the seat in the next election!” Charlotte was really excited. Faraday wasn’t surprised - she was glad it wasn’t a path she wanted. No matter how common divorce was these days, that half her children had failed marriages would not have inspired confidence in voters.

Besides, she had always preferred the power of the shadows as Head of the SCIA.

Margery’s feelings towards Finn had changed rather dramatically. Instead of desperate and willing to do whatever possible to retain their marriage, she now felt a fair amount of fury at him for refusing to have what it took to maintain their relationship. 

Indeed, she sometimes considered rather dark thoughts. They had promised the Watcher to remain married until death do them part. If Finn had the decency to die, then at least they would have respected those vows.

Although she allowed herself to fantasize once in a while, murder would not have put her in a better state of grace with the Watcher than divorce.

Margery did not, however, have much idea of how to start over since the marriage she had built her life around was definitely over.

“Hunter, the phone’s for you!” Margery called. She did worry that her failed marriage would have a very bad impact on her son, whose relationship had previously relied on the fantasy of easy happily ever after.

“Delilah’s coming over,” Hunter called as he hung up the phone. He wasn’t sure if anyone had overheard. Since his parent’s divorce, Grandmother spent more time at work, Grandpa was always in the garden, and his mother’s presence was no longer reliable.

As the rotation comes to an end for the Lawson household, the family has been through a lot.

“I’m glad you’ve been visiting more, Finn. I’ve missed having you around, as has Hunter. When you’re ready, your daughter will be welcome to come by as well.” All Gaellen wanted was for his children to be happy.

“Thanks, Dad. I have a long way to go with Hathor, but it’s good to be welcome and around Hunter more.”

“Both Finn and Garrick lost their shorts, and neither of them was willing to come out of the water. It was a sunny day, but still, they were getting cold. I had to wade in after them with towels to cover them up!” Gaellen laughed as he shared the story with the family.

Everyone had heard it a hundred times, but they way Gaellen told it, it was still SO funny. And Finn was always a bit embarrassed, but laughing too.

“I’m going to tell Garrick you told that story again. You better tell it next time he and Rick visit.” Finn definitely wanted to share that embarrassment with his twin.

“It would be nice for Hunter and Rick to spend some more time together. Rick will be going to high school next year. I bet he’d love some pointers from his cousin,” Margery suggested to Finn. She was getting comfortable with her new relationship as a co-parent with her ex.

“That’s a wonderful idea! Or perhaps we should all go to the Islands again and soak up some sun - with all 6 kids!” There was little Gaellen would have liked more than to have his 6 children and 5 grandchildren around him for a holiday.

“That’s a lovely idea, darling. We’ll have to arrange it. Perhaps in the summer?” Faraday did like the idea, and suspected it wouldn’t be too long until Genevive’s kids could join them too, even if only for a holiday.

“I really appreciate you making my dinner every time I visit, Hunter, but perhaps it’s time to try a new meal. You’ve perfected this soup! You’d do well to try something new,” Finn commented, scarfing down yet another bowl of the dish.

“Thanks, Dad.”

Hunter was a lot less close with his mom these days, between her having been unwell and her engagement to Justin Davis. He was mad, but he knew he couldn’t be too mad at her. Being close with his Dad again made him feel like there were some things he could control.

“You should come by soon. And I’m going to arrange for you to meet Hathor too. I know it’s a lot. It’s a lot for me too. But you are my son, and I love you. I’m here for you.” Finn hugged his son in an unexpected burst of emotion.

“I love you too, Dad.”

And so the Spring comes to an end for Household 11.

Margery had spent almost two years feeling anxiety and conflict over her life decisions.

She continued to be furious about the outcome of her marriage with Finn. That he had cheated on her, that he hadn’t been willing to try, and that they had been so poorly suited for each other and miserable.

She had not wanted to get divorced, but she was glad to be done with Finn.

And she was excited. For the first time in so long, she was excited about Justin. About spending time with him, about the idea of kissing him. They hadn’t kissed yet, but they would...as soon as she was ready. That was Justin, so patient and willing to let her decide what she wanted.

Perhaps she should join Faraday for her evening yoga sessions. The meditation might be the key to finding peace.

As Margery went to find her son’s grandmother (no longer her own Mother-in-Law), Margery noticed the plants that Delilah had commented on. It probably wasn’t a good idea to have poisonous plants so easy to access. As a writer, she was more familiar than most with the properties of these plants. Both she and Coriel (Justin’s mom) had used them in a story or two over the years.

She hoped Gaellen and Faraday wouldn’t be too upset, but Faraday had also told Margery she would support her in whatever she needed, and giving the place a facelift for her future daughter-in-law’s peace of mind was soothing her.

She cleaned up both the foxglove and the belladonna, keeping the plants separate from the compost so no accidents could occur.

There was a lot happening in Hunter’s life.

He tried to find moments of joy, but he was so very busy.

His parents had gotten divorced.

His mother had tried to kill herself and was now in recovery.

His father had a 7 year old daughter Hunter didn’t know.

His mother was dating his girlfriend’s father.

And on top of all of that, Hunter was trying to complete his last semester of high school to graduate.

“Rock, Paper, Scissors!” Charles announced. “Rock smashes scissors!”

Hunter looked at his two fingers, that had been scissors. “Do you think two people can be happily married?” he asked his friend.

“Absolutely. My Mom’s doing it for the third time.” The look Hunter gave Charles told him that wasn’t the answer he was hoping for. Charles tried again. “Look, one thing I learned from my Mom...if you don’t work at it, your relationships will fail.”

That was advice that Hunter understood.

It was important to work at his relationships. He would work at his relationship with Delilah, always. But that wasn’t the only one.

He rarely saw his father, so it was important that when he did, he made a good impression. He took a recipe he had worked on a few times with the butler and prepared it when his dad had scheduled a visit.

“Did you make this?” Faraday asked as she joined her husband, son and grandson for dinner.

Hunter had, and everyone was very impressed.

Amidst all the turmoil, Faraday’s birthday approached. She was about to be 65, and Gaellen was not about to let that pass without a proper celebration.

The kids arrived early to help set up.

When Aunt Samantha arrived early, Gethan, Fayna and Frederick kept her entertained with a video game competition, like they had done when they were young.

The guest list was long and impressive. Whether or not you knew Faraday was the head of the SCIA, she was well connected in the community.

Matthew and Liz Hunt were there, as well as Charlotte Davis.

Naturally, all 6 of Faraday’s children were in attendance, even Finn.

“Nice outfit,” Gaellen commented when he saw Jeremy was in his swimsuit.

“Didn’t realize we were about to do the cake. Didn’t want to miss it!” was Jeremy’s response.

“You probably could have found the time,” Faraday observed as Jeremy was the first to join them for the cake.

It wasn’t long before a large crowd formed, a few in their swimsuits since it was a perfect day to enjoy the pool during the party.

Faraday looked around at all those who were celebrating with her. Her friends. Her family. She was truly blessed with a happy life. 

She blew out the candles to great applause and fanfare.

Once the celebration was done, Faraday was the first to have some cake. As she settled herself, she noted that Margery and Justin were making out happily, which seemed to distress her daughter, Fayna. 

She would allow Gaellen to worry about such things. She intended to enjoy herself on her birthday.
