Farcountry Press, an independent, family-owned publisher in Helena, Montana, is seeking someone to join our team as our Data Coordinator/Administrative Assistant. The ideal candidate should be personable, a creative problem solver and a self-starter who loves books and wants to work in the publishing industry. If you get excited by the opportunity to "wear many hats" and assist multiple departments, this job may be for you.

The position is responsible for managing our publications database and submitting new titles to online retailers. Duties will include light copywriting, uploading eBooks, creating custom spreadsheets and continually updating and correcting information on databases, as well as providing assistance to the marketing, sales, and editorial departments.

A passion for “all things digital” and deep interest in the ever-changing online landscape of modern publishing is paramount to the position’s success.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Computer literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites with a strong knowledge of Excel

Detail oriented

Ability to maintain a sense of humor while multi-tasking and managing changing priorities

An interest in and understanding of databases and information 

Understanding of or willingness to learn digital publishing platforms 

Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills 

Ability to work independently with little supervision Interest in learning new skills

Rudimentary HTML coding and Photoshop skills are a plus

Yellow Stones Talking: What will you hear?

New Children’s book Yellow Stones asks kids what they see when they look at rocks—and teaches a valuable lesson.

When you look at rocks, what do you see? In author Caroline McClure’s new book Yellow Stones: What Do You See? she takes young readers on a journey of imagination by showcasing rocks from her special place—Yellowstone National Park. “My heart lives and lies in the wild of Yellowstone amid my treasured rocks and landscapes,” says Caroline. “As an adult, I look to the natural world to retain the curiosity and imagination of my childhood.”

“I learned to notice nature and its quirky shapes from my grandfather, Victor Clarence,” Caroline reminisces. “Living and working in Yellowstone allows me to continue to explore the fascinating world at my feet. On long walks along the shores of Yellowstone Lake, a stone might shout at me: ‘Hey, I’m a fox!’ or ‘Look a me, I’m a handsome bull bison!’”

In sharing her creativity, Caroline hopes to encourage readers to use their imaginations and make their own discoveries. “You may see what I see in these rocks, or you may see something entirely different,” she says. Regardless of what you imagine, the key lesson, Caroline suggests, is that young readers learn to notice the stones and develop a desire to protect them.  

“It is illegal to remove any specimens from national park boundaries!” Caroline reminds readers. This is something she takes very seriously. To this day, the Yellowstone treasures featured in the book remain in the park, safe to capture the imaginations of future rock lovers. It’s the beginning of a journey that Caroline hopes will last a lifetime. “My message to children and adults is to always retain the curiosity and imagination of a child,” Caroline says proudly. “My life-defining word is CURIOSITY.”

New Montana Photography Collection Combines Stunning Images in Affordable Format

It only takes a glance through the pages of our (Farcountry Press) newest release, Montana: A Photographic Journey to see the scope, scale, and ambition of the project. And to be honest, we really could accept nothing less. We are a lot of things to a lot of different people - but one thing we are to everyone is a Montana Publisher. 

We take great pride at being the largest publisher in the state, and we all consider it a great honor to have the opportunity to put out books (with talented artist like Steve and Jason) that share this special place.

Aimed to offer readers an insider’s tour of the Treasure State, resident photographers Stephen C. Hinch and Jason Savage’s knowledge and love for Montana shines in this comprehensive tribute. 

Although both photographers are independent professionals, they turned out to be the perfect duo to whisk readers along a statewide tour of Big Sky-sized wonders. Jason worked for Farcountry way-back-when, and we actually met Steve when he self-published his first title through Sweetgrass Books. (Note: Sweetgrass is an imprint of Farcountry.) Having such a strong relationship with both photographers helps to ensure that a project like this stayed special. 

Showcasing the scenery and wildlife that make Montana such a beloved and exceptional place, Montana: A Photographic Journey is the newest installment of Farcountry Press’ Impressions/A Photographic Journey series. Last year we grew the series with the additions of Texas Wildflowers: Impressions, Virginia: APJ, Grand Tetons: APJ and Steve Hinch’s own Yellowstone: APJ (another classic from Mr. Hinch.)
