In 1868, Hardy wrote a satirical novel 'The Poor Man and the Lady'. It was rejected by three publishers and he was told by George Meredith that it "Had not enough plot". Two years later Hardy showed that he had taken this comment seriously when 'Desperate Remedies' appeared. This was 'all' plot - a lurid, complicated detection novel. In 1986 appeared 'The Mayor of Casterbridge', containing Hardy's finest study of masculine character in Michael Henchard. Last year in class we studied Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge and there's these two characters, Henchard and Farfrae, who represent how agriculture is being industrialised or something, but what really matters is that Henfrae is totally on, bitches. I spent every single class pointing out all the subtext to my friend Kelly, thus annoying the fuck out of the poor girl. Then, one day, the teacher said three words: "latent homosexual feelings". I sat there, looking at her, smiling, a single tear rolling down my cheek.
