In 1868, Hardy wrote a satirical novel 'The Poor Man and the Lady'. It was rejected by three publishers and he was told by George Meredith that it "Had not enough plot". Two years later Hardy showed that he had taken this comment seriously when 'Desperate Remedies' appeared. This was 'all' plot - a lurid, complicated detection novel. In 1986 appeared 'The Mayor of Casterbridge', containing Hardy's finest study of masculine character in Michael Henchard.
