Last week’s Farmland Friday blog, “Why Farmers Feel Trapped,” looked at something most of us never see when we walk through the grocery store.
Farmers pay their expenses long before they know what the harvest will bring. They face weather, debt, and unpredictable markets while other people often control both their costs and selling prices.
That is not freedom, and it is not a lack of hard work. It is a system asking farmers to carry nearly all the risk without giving them enough control.
Protecting our food means protecting our farmers too.
