farmout asked: What's your take/interpretation on E Fuori È Buio?
Answer: I've always thought it's about being in the closet, it's the only interpretation that makes sense to me. Even back then, "paura di star bene, di scegliere e sbagliare" really spoke to me as a gay man. Now that we know what his life was like at the time, and with the second verse being so autobiographical, I can't really see it any other way.
I see the "you" in the song as "love" in general. He's had a taste of it but he's unable to actually have it. Outside of the closet there is only darkness, because it's so unknown and scary. But outside is where love is. And he's scared that these thoughts will make him see "love" as a sad thing that he will lose interest in. It also explains the vampire in the video, she sort of represents "love" for him, it's something that he can enjoy in the dark while it drains his life, and something that can't tolerate sunlight.
Italian listeners don't tend to think in gay themes though, and at the time he was actually closeted, so I think they see it more in general terms: being afraid to love and be loved, or being afraid of how much you love someone. As for his own quotes, a few months ago he was kind of asked about it and he said it was inspired by a Mexican roommate who was always anxiously waiting for his girlfriend. In the video introductions on the TZN DVDs he simply says it's "a love song". No idea if he's said more about it back in the day.
He enjoys people interpreting his songs in different ways though, so no matter what you think, you have his blessing!
