Tiziano has confirmed his new album comes out in November next year. Meanwhile he has also re-recorded "Il conforto" for Giorgia's cover album. Honestly a little disrespectful to Carmen, but the result is pretty nice.
Tiromancino have released a compilation album with re-recorded duet versions of their songs, and their biggest hit "Per me è importante" was done with Tiziano. I really like it!
Now that the Il mestiere della vita era is well and truly over, I can't help but feel dissatisfied with the direction Tiziano's career has taken, and I'm one of the few fans who LOVE the album and consider it one of his best. It's no secret that this was the least successful record of his career, and I fear this trend will only continue, due to various factors both in and out of his control. Since this blog has always been my "Tiziano outlet" (as there are few other places where a non-Italian speaker can discuss him in depth) I'm going to vent about it here.
Artistry. One of the things that always made him special was his songwriting talent. Up until Alessandra Amoroso's Amore puro, both the quality and quantity of songs that he wrote by himself were astounding. Other than his own albums, there were plenty of amazing songs left that went to other artists. Unfortunately, despite his claims to the contrary, I feel that his well is quickly running dry. It's been almost five years since that album and the number of songs since then, on which he has sole writing credit, is six. And this includes songs like "Lo stadio" and "Troppo bene (per stare male)" that are quite weak in the context of his discography. It's a little more if you include the songs where he wrote lyrics over someone else's music, but it is still shockingly low. His song themes are also becoming increasingly repetitive and banal.
There's nothing wrong with co-writing songs, and there are amazing singers who never write at all, but after a decade of being Italy's most prominent and prolific young cantautore, the drought is both noticeable and disconcerting. Emanuele Dabbono is a fine writer, and I can't complain about their masterpiece "Il conforto", but I don't think any fan is ecstatic about their long-term collaboration. You get the feeling that Tiziano needs the creativity of others to jump-start his own, whereas before it all came from him. It creates a distance between who he is and what he is saying in his songs.
Honesty. That leads me to what I think is his biggest problem right now, the lack of honesty, or genuineness. This is something that has been especially jarring this era. The album title Il mestiere della vita was actually quite ominous. He has embraced his career as a job, a profession, rather than his natural state of being. You get the feeling he is now playing a role whenever he sets foot in Italy. He is providing a service to the Italian people, as their go-to singer when it comes to love. It's no longer about him putting his heart on his sleeve.
This lack of genuineness pervades every aspect of his career; his music, his image, his interviews. His songs don't speak to people the way they used to, even though the language is simpler. People could only scratch their heads when he explained the meaning of "Potremmo ritornare". He and Emanuele had different interpretations of "Il conforto". No one but the fan girls are buying this asexual, quasi-hetero thing he has going on in his music videos. In interviews he's often contradicting himself, or exaggerating. For example, in late 2015 he said he had "two albums' worth of songs" ready to be released. Now he's saying he will spend 2018 writing the new album. Actually, he's always saying that he is writing songs. Okay, so where are they?
I don't think it's only hardcore fans like me who are picking up on this. "Tiziano Ferro" the product is too curated now and that makes him less interesting. His personal life is obviously his to protect, and I don't think the way he guards his privacy is an issue. But it's a strange irony that his public persona was more genuine before his coming out. A few days ago while accepting his award he choked up, dedicating it to his American boyfriend and saying he's the reason he feels like Los Angeles is home. That was probably his most beautiful and genuine public moment in years, yet in Italy it went virtually unnoticed.
Relatability. This is something that is less within his control, but that is also contributing to his decline in popularity. His moving to the United States was his choice to make, but I don't think there was any interview this era where he didn't talk about it, repeating the same stuff ad nauseam. I only vaguely cared about it the first time. Most of us Europeans have no desire to live in the US, so it's hard to be excited or relate to his new life there. And the feeling that he's "one of us" disappears the more he is entrenched in that culture. When he lived abroad before (in Mexico and the UK) his schedule was always so full and his career so busy that it didn't feel like he ever left. Now he disappears for months at a time, happily living on the other side of the planet. It is alienating.
Musically this is an issue too. His sound was very Americanized early in his career, but that was when the global popularity of American music was at its height, and why it worked for him back then. Those times are long gone. The Urban vs. Acoustic re-release was for all intents and purposes a commercial and musical disaster. Yet he considers this a preview of what's to come, a new album heavily influenced by American music. I don't know anyone who reacted positively to that statement.
Some of this might he hyperbolic or overly critical, but I definitely think these are all real concerns that he and his manager should think long and hard about before the new album that is scheduled for next year. It's easy to look at the positive signs, as the 2017 tour was his biggest yet and the album still sold well. But they have to recognize that this was because of his superstar status, and not because this album was well received. If being a singer is his mestiere della vita, then he has to see clearly what brought him his success, and continue to be his genuine self and rely on his instinct, rather than commercial strategy and marketing. It's too soon for him to enter the "nostalgia phase" of his career where people only care about his signature songs of the distant past. Even if for some he is already there.
Tiziano was honored at the Los Angeles Italia film festival last night, receiving an Italian Excellence award. He was there in person (easy since he lives there) and sang "L'amore è una cosa semplice" and "Non me lo so spiegare". Here's some footage from people who were there.
The era continues after all with sixth single "Solo è solo una parola". This is probably his most hetero video yet, so yeah... At least it's nice looking.
Tiziano appeared on Roberto Bolle's one-man dance show, performing "Il mestiere della vita" and having a friendly conversation with him. This was taped a couple of months ago, but it only aired yesterday.
It's probably his last televised appearance of the era. A sixth single seems really unlikely at this point, so I suppose this is it. Time to wait for the next album!
Covering Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" for Christmas karaoke. A while ago he asked what song to sing and a large majority of fans went with this dull and uninspired choice. I quite like his rendition though. He said this will be the last one (at least for Christmas) since it's becoming something obligatory and he prefers to do things spontaneously.
The second of three showcases he's doing this week. Tonight is the last one for RSI, which will be streamed live.
Some good news! I've written about Tiziano's legal troubles before (see here) and yesterday he was finally acquitted of all charges. The judge accepted that his move to the UK was real and not to evade taxes. Tiziano himself also commented on the matter today (for the first time in the eight years this has been going on) saying how he has always silently endured the insults people were throwing at him when they didn't even know the truth. He says he is fortunate that he was able to defend himself in court and that his thoughts are with those who don't have the means. He dedicates the legal victory to those who have always stood by him.
Fabri Fibra and Tiziano made a new version of Fabri's current hit "Stavo pensando a te". They also performed it on TV today which you can watch here. I like it a lot!
Tiziano appeared on the X Factor finale this week where he performed his latest single "Il mestiere della vita", as well as "L'amore è una cosa semplice" for some reason. Not sure why he never sings the latter properly anymore. The original melody is much better!
"La Tua Vita Intera" from the album Il Mestiere Della Vita
Tiziano has defined this song as a "cry of pain and hope in slow motion". He says he struggled to sing it because he kept choking up, so it has a lot of meaning to him. The lyrics are quite abstract and can be interpreted in many ways. I tend to see it as something he sings to himself.
He still hasn't performed it live, so he likely never will.
English translation of "La Tua Vita Intera":
"Your Whole Life" Let me look at you As if we just met As if it doesn't matter As if it's the first time Last night I dreamed of you But what I said, I didn't do And now it doesn't matter Like after the first time Hold me now And then the worst will pass What connects us is love, I reject the truce I reject the truce Now I demand a war Whole life I want your whole life After the storm Love is all that remains It doesn't matter You can do anything I can do anything Hold me now And then the worst will pass What connects us is love, I reject the truce I reject the truce Now I demand a war Whole life I want your whole life Whole life And don't worry, I'll be the one to save you Yet now I reject the truce Whole life I want your whole life I reject the truce I reject the truce Through the war How... doesn't matter
Last year it was already rumored that Vanesa Martín and Tiziano had recorded two duets, one for her album and one for his. But in the end she only appeared on Tiziano's album. Fortunately Vanesa just released a live version of her album Munay and their second duet is on it as a bonus track. Most of his parts are in Italian, which is unusual for his international duets, but it works very well.
"Il Mestiere Della Vita" from the album Il Mestiere Della Vita
The title track and fifth single of the album is essentially the sequel to "Ed Ero Contentissimo". It's one of the songs where the "you" is strictly female, and after the album's release he was surprised there weren't more questions about it. In fact, as far as I know he was asked about it only once. There he confirmed the song is about a woman not able to accept his homosexuality, or in more general terms, the fact that he can't love her like she loves him.
While it's a beautiful song, this rehashing of a theme that should be ancient history by now is the main reason I'm not as emotionally attached to this song (or album) as I am to the older ones. But that's a personal gripe. From what I can tell, this song has been the fan favorite on the album since day one.
English translation of "Il Mestiere Della Vita":
"The Craft of Life" Close the door when you leave There's too much of you in here Then don't turn around, keep waiting And you will be surprised That the dreams you have to get back Can't be split in two It's not the life you wanted Because life is not this I laughed at our shortcomings You cry because you never changed me That photo remains the same You're the only one who's different If you want to come back, fine, then come back Because if you come, I'll go back to who I was And no, it's not life that clips our wings Trust in the care of your memories and loved ones And let it be the craft of life Let it go And I will run from these looks So that they don't see The hurt I've kept quiet, that's burying me You go and find your smile again I will wait for you here whatever happens If you want to come back, fine, then come back Because if you come, I'll go back to who I was And no, it's not life that clips our wings Trust in the care of your memories and loved ones And let it be the craft of life Let it go Let it be the craft of peace Let it go Love, I object And I respond to this pain Continue to change, make war Pick yourself up again off the ground The oblivious people don't know That love has robbed you of time Your exhausted heart knows That time is the only cure And then attempt what's incomplete, what's extraordinary Enjoy the triumph, create your own miracle Search for true love, behind each obstacle If you want to come back, fine, then come back Because if you come, I'll go back to who I was And no, it's not life that clips our wings Trust in the care of your memories and loved ones And let it be the craft of life Let it go Let it be the craft of peace Let it go Close the door when you leave There's too much of you in here
Tiziano was on Che tempo che fa again yesterday to perform his latest two singles. He sounded really good and the interview was great too. I liked his joke at the start that he and Fabio were dressed like they're getting married. Watch it here!
Unfortunately "Valore Assoluto" underperformed, so they are quickly moving on to the fifth single, the title track. The video came out today, once again directed by Gaetano Morbioli. I don't think it offers anything other than Tiziano looking good in a pretty setting, but when was the last time one of his videos delivered more than that? Before the premiere on Rai 1 yesterday, Tiziano said they filmed this last year at the same time as "Potremmo Ritornare".
Great new showcase for Radio Italia to promote the re-release!
