I learned about union organizer Larry Itliong in a Honolulu-based study group led by Filipina activists and scholars.
The more I learn about the multiracial and multilingual farmworkers strikes of the 20th century, the more I think anything is possible. Truly.
Delano Grape Strike succeeded because of the farmworkers’ refusal to let the growers pit Mexican Americans and Filipino Americans against one another. I recently read a book geared for middle school students on the role Filipino farmworkers played in the strike. It’s always the small details that get me. Itliong was known as “Seven Fingers” as he had lost three fingers when working in fisheries.
In California, a 2013 mandate requires public schools teach the history of Fil Am involvement. And October 25 is Larry Itliong Day.
