"No, you don't understand." Faélin leaned forward. "People change. You change. You may have been shit, but I can honestly say you are less of a prick than before."

Valeri lifted an eyebrow. "How drunk are you already? Or do you have fever? Brain damage? Who are you and why are you wearing Faélin's skin?"

"Haa haa, you are very funny. A jokes man. Wouldn't have thought that."

Valeri grinned. "For a moment is sounded like you are warming up to me."

"Don't be ridiculous", Faélin snorted.

Cor Faélin kohotti kulmiaan ja hymähti epävarmasti. ”Etkö nyt liioittele vähän?”

”En”, Valeri tiuskaisi. Hän kääntyi katsomaan takaisin merta kohti. ”He mursivat kuusivuotiaan veljeni käden ja näännyttivät häntä nälkään kolme päivää kuivuneen kaivon pohjalla. Sekö ei ole sinusta läpensä mätää?” Hän kohtasi cor Faélinin hämmentyneen katseen teräksisin silmin.

Cor Faélin oli hetken vaiti. ”Miksi?”

”Mistä vitusta minä tietäisin? Mitä kuusivuotias lapsi voisi tehdä ansaitakseen tuollaisen rangaistuksen?”

English:

Cor Faélin raised his eyebrows and chuckled hesitating. “Aren’t you exaggerating a bit?”

“No”, Valeri snapped. He turned to look the ocean again. “They broke my six year old brother’s arm and starved him three days on the bottom of a dry well. Are you saying that’s not rotten to the core?” He faced cor Faélin’s puzzled face with steely eyes.

Cor Faélin was quiet for a while. “Why?”

“How the fuck should I know? What could a six-year-old do to deserve such a punishment?”

Ignatus stopped before Valeri and closed him into a tight embrace. He smelled like home. Suddenly Valeri’s head was full of memories of his childhood summers, of far reaching moors about Bear Castle, where he used to play with his siblings and cousins, of the shadow of the stone bear, of sword practices with Marcus, of the smile of father when he ruffled Valeri’s curls. This was the closest to hugging father he would get ever again. He tried to swallow down the lump in his throat. Ignatus lay a hand on his shoulder after letting go of him and looked like he was trying to say something, but ended up giving him a wistful smile before stepping out.

Now Valeri saw what cor Faélin was going for. He was provoking Valeri to mess up his relationship to the general. It wouldn’t work this time. Valeri had learned at least something after cadet academy. If something, high society had taught him to control himself for better or worse. He took a deep breath and without saying anything walked past cor Faélin. Cor Faélin would get what he deserved another time.
