Really happy to say that I’m running another 3 walks with the Farrell Centre as part of the programming for their Concrete Dreams exhibition! There’s loads of other great events happening too, and you can find out about all of it here: https://www.farrellcentre.org.uk/whats-on/
Come and join us as I take you around some of my favourite modernist sites in the North East - you can find out more info and buy tickets at the links below:
30th March - Byker Estate: https://www.farrellcentre.org.uk/whats-on/urban-explorers-byker-estate/
The Byker Estate, designed by a team led by Ralph Erskine, is an internationally-renowned example of mass social housing. Filled with bright colours, wooden panelling, and sheltered by the huge ‘Wall’, join us as we explore the estate and learn about its history, the test-bed Pilot Scheme section and see how it was built to foster a community.
27th April - Metro: https://www.farrellcentre.org.uk/whats-on/urban-explorers-metro/
The Tyne & Wear Metro not only connects the region, but is a modernist marvel, employing system building techniques to create a unified and unique system. Join artist and photographer Euan Lynn on this exploration of the Metro’s inner-city, underground section, from the airy Miesian Jesmond to the underground cavern of Gateshead, and finishing at the wonderfully labyrinthine Monument.
25th May - Killingworth: https://www.farrellcentre.org.uk/whats-on/urban-explorers-killingworth/
Killingworth New Town is home to some of the finest modernist architecture in the North East. From the offices of pioneering architects FaulknerBrowns and Ryder & Yates, to Ralph Erskine’s first work in the North East, and even a flock of concrete hippos, Killingworth truly has everything a modernist could wish for.
I hope some of you can make it along!
