Crossing the ancient ford at the Lagan and Farset. This painting by JW Carey commissioned in 1906 by the Ulster Hall depicts a scene before Belfast existed. It is set in the 1520s and shows Irish mercenaries crossing the Lagan at its most accessible point. The only thing that existed there at that time was a small medieval chapel that people who came to cross the river could use. Less than one hundred years later, with the Plantation of Ulster, the town of Belfast would be born. Within another hundred years of that the town would be the biggest population centre in Ulster.

Belfast is derived from the Irish Name of Béal Feirste meaning the mouth of the River Farset. The river's source was in the hills above Ballysillan in the north of the city and it used to flow straight down the middle of High street  and into the Lagan. Now, the River Farset is covered and contained in a huge pipe under the road. Old drawings show it as bustling river which once was the heart of Belfast’s industrial development from powering the mills around the Crumlin, Shankill & Falls road areas to hosting the merchant ships that docked on the High street. The final section of the river Farset around the town centre was covered over in 1848. The Big Fish sculpture on the water's edge at the bottom of High st now marks the spot where the underground Farset flows  into the Lagan.
