Jasper checked the lamb shanks that were simmering in the wine-broth. The rosemary, thyme, garlic, and other ingredients that were sunk into the broth perfumed the kitchen of his home with a mouthwatering smell. He didn’t cook more than basics often, but it wasn’t because he didn’t know how to do so. There simply was no occasion for it. It wasn’t like Jasper would have to put much more than a balanced meal on the table for Saturn to be forever thankful for it.
I could give Saturn a potato with some cream and butter and he’d be thankful, Jasper’s thoughts said, making him laugh low under his breath.
But the lamb was nearly done, and Sunisa was likely to be arriving soon. Jasper sat down to wait for her to come to the door — there was little else he could do but wait at the moment.
