Laguna Seca (USA), Thursday 10 July 2014 – The stunning Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will this weekend host the ninth round of the 2014 eni FIM Superbike World Championship. This is the second year in a row that the Californian venue welcomes the series after an eight year absence from the calendar.

Like last year reigning champion Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) enters the US Round as the points leader but this time with a much wider margin on his closest rivals. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team), Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) are chasing with a 42, 43 and 48 point gap respectively and they all hope to make some ground to the top before the summer break.

Sykes came out victorious in last year’s first encounter after edging Chaz Davies in the 12 lapper that took place after a second restart. The KRT rider was then fourth in in the second race after leading for the most part.

2013 pole sitter Sylvain Guintoli and his teammate Marco Melandri are looking forward to putting things straight after coming together in the wet second at Portimao whilst closing the gap to the leader. Both riders were major players in the battle for top honours in California a year ago, with the Frenchman missing the opportunity for a win due to the two red flag situations that characterised the first race. Melandri has stepped three times onto the Laguna Seca podium: once in WSBK last year and twice in MotoGP (2006 and 2007).

Second race winner at Portimao Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike) will make his debut at Laguna Seca this weekend, as the Ulsterman had to miss the US Round due to the femur injury suffered at the Nurburgring two rounds before, which put a premature end to his 2013 campaign.

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) had one of the best moments so far in his career last year at Laguna Seca, as he was second at the finish line in race 2 after battling for first place with early leader Sykes, before Eugene Laverty stole the show by getting the better of both rivals in the latter stages.

The Voltcom Crescent Suzuki rider is hoping to finally return to his early season form, although he is currently dealing with the foot injury sustained in Sepang a month ago. Alex Lowes, on the other hand, will take on the Corkscrew for the first time ever after another encouraging performance in Portugal.

Team MV Agusta Reparto Corse has selected Leon Camier to replace the injured Claudio Corti. Unlike the Italian, Camier has never raced at Laguna Seca before as he was unable to race due to the foot injury he had during free practice in Istanbul in 2013, whilst racing for the Crescent Suzuki squad.

Il nordirlandese fu costretto a saltare l’appuntamento statunitense del 2013 a causa della frattura al femore rimediata al Nurburgring due round prima, che aveva posto la parola fine alla sua stagione.

 Sykes leads the WSBK standings as the series heads to Imola

Barcelona (Spain), Tuesday 6 May 2013 – The eni FIM Superbike World Championship is about to return to the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari of Imola for what will be the fourth event of the 2014 season. The historical venue, located in the city, 40km southeast of Bologna, entered the World Superbike calendar in 2001 and has so far hosted the series 11 times. In 2009 a new, slow-speed chicane named "Nuova Variante Bassa" was added to the circuit layout just before the finish line.

Last year Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) had one of his three dominant weekends in his title-winning season: the Huddersfield born rider secured pole position and won both races, setting the new outright best lap and lap record in the process. The reigning World Superbike Champion and current points leader is the only rider to start from Pole Position on more than one occasion at the Italian track – in 2010 (maiden career pole), 2012 and 2013.

After winning his second race of the season last time out at Assen (race one), Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) now lies second in the standings, twelve points shy of the leader and three points ahead of compatriot Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team). Both riders have never won on the Italian track, unlike Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike), who climbed on the top step of the podium at Imola in 2011 (race one).

The Ulsterman is looking forward to the Italian round, hoping to keep the momentum going after some solid performances in the first three outings of 2014 and his maiden race victory of the year scored in the second Dutch race a fortnight ago.

With the riders in the top four within 19 points of each other, the rest of the field is already falling a significant distance behind. Fifth place Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team), still looking for his first win astride the factory RSV4, has a 39 point gap from the top, with Ducati Superbike Team duo Davide Giugliano (49) and Chaz Davies (61), as well as Voltcom Crescent Suzuki's Eugene Laverty (62), further behind.

Following his double DNF at Assen, Laverty hopes to return to his early season form, whilst the goal for Laverty's team mate Alex Lowes is to build on his maiden WSBK podium, achieved on Dutch soil.

The battle for the title in the EVO class continues at Imola with Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Team) looking strong after finishing twice on top at Assen. David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) will take the charge to the Italian, hoping his injured right hand will not affect his on-track performance. Leon Camier (BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team) will again replace the Sylvain Barrier, whilst current Italian Superbike champion Ivan Goi will make a wildcard appearance aboard the Barni Racing Team's EVO-spec 1199 Panigale R.

Team Hero EBR will race with an upgraded machine, with Bimota Alstare and MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport) looking for solid results as the action resumes.

 Imola accoglie il Mondiale Superbike per il quarto round

Barcellona (Spagna), martedì 6 maggio 2014 – Il Campionato Mondiale eni FIM Superbike farà ritorno questo fine settimana all'Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola, per il quarto evento della stagione 2014. Il tracciato italiano ha fatto il suo debutto nel calendario WSBK nel 2001, ospitando fino ad ora ben undici edizioni del Mondiale. Il 2009 ha visto l'aggiunta di una chicane al layout già presente, denominata "Nuova Variante Bassa", posta a ridosso del rettilineo dei box.

Lo scorso anno Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) fu protagonista ad Imola di uno dei suoi tre fine settimana di totale dominio, con pole position, vittoria di entrambe le gare, nuovo best lap e lap record della pista. L'attuale leader, nonché campione in carica della competizione, è l'unico pilota ad aver centrato più di una pole position su questa pista – tre, nel 2010, 2012 e 2013.

Dopo essersi assicurato il secondo successo stagionale due domeniche fa ad Assen (in gara 1), Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) è ora al secondo posto della calssifica, a 12 punti di ritardo dal leader e con tre lunghezze di vantaggio sull'altro pilota KRT Loris Baz. Entrambi i piloti francesi non hanno mai vinto ad Imola, a differenza di Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike), il quale salì sul gradino più alto del podio nel 2012 (gara 1). Il pilota nordirlandese guarda con attesa al round italiano, sperando di continuare la striscia di risultati positivi, culminata nel primo successo in stagione in gara 2 proprio ad Assen. Rea è attualmente al quarto posto nella corsa per il titolo, una posizione che non occupava da diverso tempo.

Con i primi quattro piloti della classifica racchiusi in 19 punti, gli altri protagonisti si ritrovano in una situazione già discretamente deficitaria, specialmente dopo soli tre round disputati. Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team), ancora alla ricerca della prima vittoria da pilota ufficiale Aprilia in WSBK, accusa un gap di ben 39 punti dal vertice, seguito dalla coppia di piloti ufficiali Ducati composta da Davide Giugliano (-49) e Chaz Davies (-61) e da Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), staccato di ben 62 lunghezze.

Dopo una domenica olandese da incubo, chiusa con due zeri in altrettante gare, Laverty punta a tornare sui livelli di forma di inizio stagione, mentre il compagno di squadra Lowes spera di compiere un ulteriore passo in avanti, dopo il primo podio della sua carriera in WSBK, conquistato proprio ad Assen in gara 2.

La battaglia per il titolo della classe EVO prosegue ad Imola con Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Team) deciso a far bene davanti al pubblico di casa, dopo aver terminato in testa al gruppo di piloti della categoria in entrambe le gare dello scorso round. David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) proverà ad insidiare il genovese, sperando in un miglioramento delle condizioni della mano destra infortunata. Ancora spazio per Leon Camier nel BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team, il quale sostituirà nuovamente il convalescente Sylvain Barrier. Il campione italiano Superbike Ivan Goi scenderà invece in pista come wildcard, in sella alla 1199 Panigale R del Barni Racing Team Ducati.

Novità a livello tecnico per il Team Hero EBR, mentre per Bimota Alstare e MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport il round di Imola rappresenterà l'occasione per migliorare le proprie performance e regalare al pubblico italiano qualche soddisfazione.
