Powder protein supplement ‘Soy Protein 90′ by The Protein Works
Today I present you with my review for a protein supplement that I’m trying for the first time and which I have just purchased, which is soy protein isolate from the UK brand The Protein Works.
I purchased the 2 lbs. package for the equivalent to 16.21 USD, but the brand also sells the 4 lbs. version.
This is a complete protein, that meaning that it has all the essential aminoacids to it (as you know, soy is one of the few beans / legumes that is a complete protein).
This product has no added flavors whatsoever, so, no artificial sweeteners nor any other additives. For me this is a plus for a processed product, turning it into a more natural one.
The scoop (30 gr. / 1.05 lbs - comes with the package) corresponds to 27 gr. / 0.95 lbs of protein content for the product, which I find pretty reasonable.
Package serves up to 32 portions.
I will save the controversy on soy for the sake of this article (counter-productive estrogen or not; GMO or not; more or less phytic acid in it; any other possible issues). Soy is a no no Paleo food anyway, so like all beans, I avoid it at all costs (but soy in particular).
However, sometimes one makes choices at a given time that just seem right and adequate to the given circumstances - no point for me on regretting my choices, or I’d rather not have taken them at the first place :) - and to be honest I was curious for a while on giving soy protein a try at least for once.
On the other hand, this is an obvious cheaper protein supplement than whey or similar. As for results, is just too soon to tell, so I'll just jump right to facts that I could already find for myself about this product:
It dissolves just fine, but it turns to be a little bit lumpy on texture. It also has to be dissolved in more water compared to other protein sources. In this case, it requires about 400 ml. of water to mix in the scoop (portion), but this also depends on personal taste for texture, of course - if one prefers more of a smoothie texture or a more liquid, lighter one. Also, once the product is mixed / shaken it creates a little bit of a foam. Product color is a light yellow.
So far I didn't find any issues with the digestion of this product. The brand says that its absorption revolves around 90%, which is very nice (one thing is digestion and another thing is the protein absorption by the muscles, though :)).
Great advantages on this product so far are the absence of allergens (apart soy itself. Ha! :)): it has no lactose or gluten, as obvious, so from that perspective is very convenient for people like myself that have digestion difficulties - and consequently protein malabsorptions - even by taking a whey concentrate supplement (not for isolate, though, because whey isolate virtually has no lactose to it). This product is what's called a Vegan protein supplement... :)
Another great advantage of it is the lack of any additives: it is practically a hundred per cent soy protein isolate (remaining ingredient is soy lecithin, which is present in most of this supplements anyway, and even in processed food in general) from non GMO sources (according brand guaranties, so to speak :)). From this I deduce that this product doesn't have many of the soy cons that soy itself have. Also, this product is naturally almost free from fat and sugars, naturally.
Towards taste: I started by tasting it at its natural state, so, with no sweetness or any seasoning to it, so I could precisely get to know how it naturally tastes. I got pleasantly surprised by finding it pretty enjoyable just like that: it almost tastes like baby porridge (I tasted it in hot water as well) :) Still, after the first sip I added in sugars and seasonings, coffee (this one only prior to my workout), etc., because I'm still putting on lean mass.
Another advantage on a natural-tasting product - besides the obvious - is that that way one can flavor it as one prefers, by for instance adding in cocoa powder, cinnamon, things like that. One isn't limited to the original flavors of the manufactured product, you see (that many times mask any other flavors that one could enjoy adding to the shake).
Personally and because I always workout first thing in the morning, what I did was dividing the scoop - half a scoop prior to my workout and another half of a scoop after (half an hour later max.).
The brand recommends a scoop upon waking (for stopping the catabolism, I deduce), another scoop immediately after the training and finally, another scoop before bed.
So far I'm satisfied with this product.
