Fatal Encounters

Fatal Encounters is building a national database of people killed during interactions with police officers. With your backing, we’ll extend our operations, hire a full-time team and introduce data in Spanish that focuses on undocumented immigrants.

Hey guys! I work in the non-profit and the group I work with is called FatalEncounters. What we do at FE is track people who have been killed by police annually, whether they had been killed by guns, asphyxiation, or some other means. We have collected this kind of information starting from January 1, 2000 up to the present.

In addition, we also do a Spanish equivalent called EncuentrosMortales that tracks the number of illegal immigrants who are killed along the border states by law enforcement. This sort of information is not made by any agency and FE and EM are one of the few groups in America that is tracking this information.

The biggest thing I’ve taken away from this project is something I’ll never be able to prove, but I’m convinced to my core: The lack of such a database is intentional. No government—not the federal government, and not the thousands of municipalities that give their police forces license to use deadly force—wants you to know how many people it kills and why.

The second biggest thing I learned is that bad journalism colludes with police to hide this information. The primary reason for this is that police will cut off information to reporters who tell tales. And a reporter can’t work if he or she can’t talk to sources. It happened to me on almost every level as I advanced this year-long Fatal Encounters series through the News & Review. First they talk; then they stop, then they roadblock.
