Alignment
For millenia since Xarcnos cast them out of the Court of the Moon Thanajon and Mitthyo had sat silently in the ether. Xarcnos had called a boon from Morgan, opening the portal beyond the worlds to save the two whom he cherished the most. And now, the two hated him all the more for it.
Years before the war, Xarcnos had, in a failed experiment, unleashed all the power he had into the universe. This power had once flowed freely between him and his Socius, Mitthyo. Mitthyo had long gotten used to the lack of excessive magick and had learned to cope. Thanajon, on the other hand, had been left for the worse when he was cast out. Being a Lune of Moonshadow, an unnaturally gifted Other from the Court of the Moon, his powers were fed from the regent of the court, Khanidae himself. Torn from his home and held between worlds, Thanajon had no powers. Neither of them could tell where they were in the universe, nor could they use any magick to discern of their or any of their comrades’ locations.
‘Xarcnos should have let us fight and die trying. This limbo is the worst fate he could have doomed us to. And now he sends us some faint homing beacon that he’s still alive? What in the name of Khan is he thinking?’ Thanajon looked at Mitthyo amidst his frustration as if he could provide any other answer.
‘I think he is fairly clear in his expectations. He wants us to find him, even after years, centuries... millenia actually... of waiting.’
Thanajon cursed under his breath once more as his companion spoke what was on both their minds. It had been millenia of cursed immortality but Thanajon and Mitthyo were nothing if not resourceful. Apart from their absolute location, which for some reason was being hidden from them, they still had the full range of abilities, albeit with limited power. Thanajon had spent years sifting through his mind to find dark spells that could rip them from their world into another. After aeons of searching, he had finally found the correct one a few months ago. A seemingly odd coincidence. Both Mitthyo and himself had rightly assumed that they would need a vast resource of magick to accomplish what they had planned and had found in their world a most peculiar source of this magick. A startlingly nondescript collection of pools in the middle of the forest. Eight pools in total that Thanajon declared to represent the eight assemblages that had been. Elder trees lined the boundaries of the pools, ten of them in total, Thanajon once again declared this to represent tha Xarcnos was the tenth member of the Fatalita.
Mitthyo wondered all this time if he was making things up and seeing things were there wasn’t supposed to be. Of course, one doesn’t simply tell a king of old something like this.
‘Are you ready Mitthyo?’ Thanajon had written an intricate incantation that would give them extra magick to propel them out of the ether. He had planned to steal back the magickal energy that Xarcnos released into the universe. Thanajon was aware of two things. One, the energy can only be taken back by someone who originally possessed it, i.e. Mitthyo. And two, the energy must be used the second it starts being absorbed, i.e. Mitthyo cannot hold the power within himself because the amount of power Xarcnos unleashed was never meant to be held by a single body.
Thanajon stepped into the pool nearest to him and gasped. His eyes flared a soft hue of blue as he beheld the universe clearly for the first time since he was cast into the ether.
‘What luck we have Mitthyo. It seems the whole universe is literally aligning to this moment. Step in and take a look.’ Mitthyo took a hesitant step into the pool and felt magick at once surging to fill him, awakening dormant senses of a time long ago. Mitthyo looked to the skies and gaped in awe. He saw the remnants of the eight assemblages, each a formless cloud yet distinct gathering in a single line. The inter-assemblage portal was about to open once more! In absorbing the magick Xarcnos had unleashed, in light of this new revelation, Mitthyo would have the energy of three portals to fuel their escape, more than enough for them to escape the ether.
‘Five minutes by my count. What say you Mitthyo?’
Mitthyo nodded as he prepared himself for the incantation. He projected his first words clear as night into the universe, wishing with all his heart that it would wor.
‘XARCNOS FRAGOSUS VENA AQUARIA!’
Experiments
It always started the same way. The 12 fought like no one did. Of one mind and one purpose. The second a defence was broken, another rose. The instant an attack opportunity opened, it was taken. Taking on the Fatalita was no mean feat. Few tried and none ever suceeded. Such fluidity came with exacting consequences. The 12 have trained and honed their skills for millenia, each adding to others in gaps they found. In their own training, they've wiped out armies, species and even worlds. For that reason, when the last of the 12 was added, Morgan, their mistress, dictated worlds for them. It was created solely for their training and for their use. Inside these worlds, the simulations were very realistic. One had no hope of escaping alive if they were not one of the 12. Xarcnos was pushing again. He was attempting a magickal fusion of sorts, using the four elements. The four elemental Others sent a steady stream of magick into the centre, creating a sphere around the other eight. "Do your best to escape. I want to test the extent of this shield." They were in one of the 6 worlds Morgan had blessed them with. The four stood at the edges of the field, allowing the magick to blend freely. Xarcnos's Lune ability was exploding. The magick swirled around, each creating a whirl of their element before melding seemlessly into the sphere. He had placed opposing elements at opposite ends to allow the other elements to counteract the negation, if any. The sphere was a brilliant gleam of light to him, the elements blending and reacting beautifully. Inside the sphere, the eight had begun their attacks. If this were a mortal war, Iothena would naturally have the advantage having a strength of Blood. Yet in her own subtle way, she understood the need to step back and allow the others to use their more suited strengths to break the shield. Aenim went on a predictable offence with Keilzim. Sand was stirring as she struck the shield repeatedly and shards of moonlight flashed in the air. Zinneiri and Xavier were working in harmony to give the eight clear vision amidst the chaos. Xavier's bots were flying high in the sphere, recording and trasnmitting images to Zinneiri who projected them onto the eight, keeping their sight pure of Sand and Moonlight. Iothena and Heather were finding methods to cast their charms beyong the sphere unto the four of us, noting that when one of the elements fell, the balance would crumble and the shield, evaporate. "How bout some offense now?" I chuckled to the four outside. They nodded in agreement and poured more magick into their streams. The terrain began to evolve as the elements came to play. The Earth buckled and moved constantly, occasionally producing Tors and flying boulders to obstruct Aenim and Keilzim's progress. Wind stirred the Sands of attack from Aenim into Xavier's bots, disrupting his clear transmission. The Four did all they could to fight the Eight. Ingenuity played a part, ultimately, in their escape. Iothena and Heather had managed to succesfully cast their strengths beyong the sphere onto Enmia. The Other of Air was affected almost immediately. The sphere that gleamed so brilliantly shifted in hue, losing a crucial component for balance. The buffeting within ceased first. Then, Sand and Moonlight focused their attacks in her direction. Eventually, Enmia gave out. Her stream of power diminished and flared into nothing. The remaining three elements were out of balance. Earth had to netutralise Fire and Water. Newgexyl flamed up, the heat he generated rippled across the world, scalding the vegetation slowly. Xarcnos pitched in as well, fuelling his magick from an ancient reserve within his ancestry. Narchael's strain was evident. The earth buckled beneath his feet. The shield was now being held together by sheer will power. Startling cracks shattered the sphere only to be restored anew. With each crack, Xarcnos detected glimmers of magick filtering through. Iothena and Heather's emotional attack was at work again, affecting the three without. Xarcnos composed himself and relied on his innate calm nature to remain unaffected. Narchael and Newgexyl were being taunted with their mutual history. Narchael collapsed first, giving in to the humiliation and shame of his past, Zinneiri perpetuated his torment by dredging up scenes of his past and replaying it. We know each other so well that we can use our weaknesses against one another. Water and Fire were at war. The sphere was ready to fall but neither of us wanted to relent. The remnants of Narchael and Enmia's elemental magick held the sphere for a few more seconds before the neutralisation peaked. Their magick rebounded spectacularly and exploded outward in a blinding eruption. Both of them were knocked off their feets. Newgexyl's flames scorched the ground each time he bounced and Xarcnos rolled straight into a waiting body of water. Iothena rushed to Newgexyl to mend his body while Aenim dashed to Xarcnos. She knew he would have no injuries as long as he was surrounded by water. Enmia and Narchael walked towards the others. Xavier had already begun his analysis of the experiment. Xarc grinned at the newly repaired Newg, clapping him on the back as the 12 were transported back to thier Citadel. "I guess we finally found out if we're equally balanced didn't we." The pair were grinning from ear to ear. Analysis: 1. Extremely powerful and difficult to break. 2. Requires precarious balance of four elements. Lacking of even one compromises integrity. 3. Completely immune to magickal and physical attacks. (When cracked, minute amounts of magick can seep past. Resolved by constant vigilance of protected members and self-regenerating capability of the shield) 4. Repeated targetted attacks have minimal to no effect. 5. Magickal flow is one-directional. Conclusion: Use only under extremely threatening consequences as a last desperate measure. Experiment successful.
Familiarity
The thing about travelling through the portal is that we usually have no idea of the time that we would actually land in. Morgan, being an Other with a strength in Chaos, usually forgets to add an element of balance into her creations. When she created the bridges for the fourteen of us to transcend the inter-assemblage barriers, she neglected to spin that crucial element of balance. Without it, her powers could manifest in many different forms when our portals were cast. In my case, the control of time was lacking. Each time I returned home, I had to be aware of the time period in which I had landed to avoid revealing anything of the future that has yet to occur. The last thing I needed on my hands was to deal with the butterfly effect.
"DO NOT ATTACK DAIR!"
A trace of magick accompanied the warning. As it was, I detected no hint of malice in both the magick and the tone of the voice. It was very very familiar to me though.
"Stand down Newg, he's a friendly," I whispered to my back. Our weapons retracted but we remained on high alert. "Show yourself!"
A flare of light punctuated the dark sky in the distance. Newg grabbed my arm and teleported us to the light source. When we arrived, we saw a young man, not older than 18 (by the standards of our immortality anyway) kneeling on the ground. He kept his head bowed, partly in respect but mostly in fear. I dug through my extensive memory to locate this figure and it finally clicked.
"Kaej. Is that you?" His gaze lifted to meet mine and he smiled.
"Well, at least I didn't die by your hands on this night. You stumbled right into the middle of my field work zone. Both of you registered as anomalies on my chart and I just knew it had to be you. I apologize for the loud bang just now. I placed it to ensure that my area was not disturbed by external variables." His explanation covered most of the pending questions I had and I continued smiling at him.
Kaej was a good friend I had met in my schooling days at Tharsgwo. He was the only other person beside MItthyo that seemed to have no issue with my status and family. Our friendship was comparable to that between me and Mitthyo. In the event that I did not meet Mitthyo that fateful night, I would have gone searching for Kaej.
Who's that stunning specimen you have there next to you?
A mental projection interrupted my thoughts and I looked to Kaej to see him gesturing towards Newg subtly. I burst out laughing and Newg raised an eyebrow, awarding me with his inquisitive look which only seemed to heighten his hotness factor in the eyes of Kaej.
"Forgive me my manners. Newgexyl, this is Kaej, an old friend of mine. Kaej, this is Newgexyl Fieroa, from the Council of the Sun." I said the last words as a warning to Kaej. He looked almost defeated as I mentioned that tiny fact about Newg.
"Dammit. Never mind. In any case, what are you doing back home?" Kaej snapped back to himself in a flash. The thing about Kaej, besides the fact that he's totally gay, is that his appearance and image is everything to him. No matter how much stress he was under, his facade would never crack. I remember the first instance of this. He had accidentally asked one of our classmates out. Naturally, he picked the hottest guy out who, as fate would have it, happened to be an extreme homophobe. That guy went around telling everybody in the school that Kaej was a fag and he became the laughing stock of the level. In spite of the constant discrimination and harassment, Kaej would enter class everyday with a smile. I admired him for that and respected him deeply. I asked myself each day how he could endure such malicious attention in a pathetic attempt to endure my own. Eventually, I gave in, cracked, told my parents and was pulled out of the school that same year. I maintained correspondence with Kaej a while after I left but those back and forths dried out eventually.
"I...," my sentence hung in the air as another sonorous clap roared through the vicinity. Newg and I went into formation while Kaej prone straight on the ground. I murmured a spell of protection for Kaej as the two of us scanned the night.
Newg flung his hands up and extrapolated his flames. The dark field illuminated in a sudden blaze. The field around us scorched in the heat and Kaej's boundary charms fragmented. In the next few moments, confusion reigned. The skies opened and rain fell upon us. The moonlight distorted and appeared to avoid us. Newg's flame contracted in a violent burst that knocked him off his feet. The magick in the air sizzled with intensity and convulsed rapidly. My awareness and ability to see the magick became a liability as a migraine developed instantly in response to the millions of dancing sparks that clouded my vision. My shield around Kaej vanished as my focus cracked. His body went into a fit as it became exposed to the large pulses of magick.
"Kaej!" I yelled out. I threw my hands out and cast a calming charm only to have it backfire in an implosion that knocked all of us out.
The last thing I remembered was hearing the sound of a wolf howling...
DESTINO
Quanto credere nel destino? Dobbiamo interpretare tutti i segnali che ci vengono dati?
