Ok, the answer to the previous ask got me curious -- what is Al's relationship/dynamic with his companions? (can be all or just his main party/whoever you feel like)
Thanks for asking 😃 I started writing this last night but was so tired I didn't finish...
Verse — At first Al viewed Verse as a necessary evil, someone useful but so far beneath him that anything he said to her was an insult wrapped in politeness. Over the course of the civil war Al comes to appreciate her company. He still thinks she's a vulgar, foul-mouthed brute, but he likes her sense of humour, her efficiency and her ruthlessness. He does often butt heads with her over her criticisms of the Disfavoured, though.
Barik — Politically, Barik and Al mostly see eye to eye. However, since Barik's presence is… unpleasant to say the least, Alendron prefers to keep his distance. He does, however, admire Barik's dedication and eventually even goes behind Tunon's back to free Barik from his rusty prison — as a "Thank You" for his loyalty. Still, their relationship is entirely professional.
Fun fact: Barik and Alendron accidentally discover what a Faraday cage is…
Lantry — Lantry becomes essential to Alendron’s party because he's literate. At first Alendron didn't trust him and kept him on a short leash, including a metaphorical shock collar. Over time Al grows very fond of his personal reading grandpa. Alendron has trouble restraining his curious side and loves listening to stories from the Burning Library's glory days or what life was like before the conquest, Tiers culture (slowly develops respect for the Tiersmen). Post-game Lantry becomes a vital part of the stabilisation process of the Tiers by serving as Alendron’s personal scribe and history consultant.
Kills-in-Shadow — Al would probably like her if he ever gave her a chance but as it stands she's little more than a tool to him. He tolerates her and allows her to indulge her violent tendencies but that's the extent of his generosity. Al is 100% willing to use the "metaphorical shock collar" on her.
Eb — Alendron likes Eb. Her intelligence and wit, her humour, her magic (in which he's extremely interested), etc. But good god did they clash at first. Alendron’s views on the Tiers and their people were… well, like Barik's or those of any other Disfavoured. It's through Eb and Lantry (but especially Eb) that Al eventually begins to see the Tiersmen as humans, even if they're "primitive". Post-game, Al often asks Eb for advice on matters of Tiers culture (first thing he learns is that there's no unified culture to the Tiers, which he knew in theory but to him it was all just southern nitpicking).
Sirin — NO. Sirin creeps Al tf out and if he hadn't thought leaving such a powerful actor unchecked was worse, he wouldn't even have recruited her. Al doesn't like to have his senses messed with as it makes him feel weak and helpless, so Sirin trying to manipulate him on their first meeting was already a bad start. Ironically, if he ever talked to her enough to find out about her past, Al would probably have been sympathetic towards her.
Alendron’s standard party is a fully ranged one consisting of him, Verse, Eb and Lantry. This is because Al's spells don't distinguish between friend and foe. A badly timed maneuver by Barik and an equally badly timed chain lightning spell led to the aforementioned discovery of the Faraday cage…
