Thank you to @feltonkizer and @salthedirector. I am so glad to have taken part in this creative venture. This series showcases the talented @her_edges_gone ’s hair art with a funky twist. This was the first shoot I’ve done where my hair was the highlight. I was so excited when I found out I had been chosen for this shoot, and on my lockiversary too! I’ve had my locs one full year 🎉😊.
Growing up dark-skinned was not easy. And having natural hair only added to the difficulty. But it wasn’t until last year (September 20,2015) that I decided to fully embrace who I am and loc my hair. I had been putting off this decision for about 5 years; until one day I just woke up and did it.
I had course long hair growing up. My mother never gave me a perm, thank God, but having natural hair wasn’t ‘common’ as a kid. I was teased a lot. I would get compliments on my hair from time to time but only when it was STRAIGHTENED.
As a child I struggled with my self esteem and sense of worth. I still do now. But loc'ing my hair forced me to look at myself for what I truly am. Having locs definitely puts me face to face with my self-identity every day. And I think because of that I have become a stronger person for myself and other young girls who feel the same way.
I’m very thankful for the people I met doing this shoot and I hope you guys know that you left with me a little bit of sparkle. ✨
