Hear Me
For children of the world's end, there were plenty of things to fear, and Mireya Dunn had experienced and faced many of them: losing a home, losing friends and family, facing Walkers head on-- the list could be endless. She was a lucky little lady, and Mireya knew it, but she also knew luck ran out easily.
The home she lived in now was surrounded by walkers, hissing and groaning on pikes. By now, the little girl was used to them. Hell, as they'd left the Sanctuary, she'd even waved them 'bye' like they were friends she'd see in a while, hopping into the truck with a toy elephant in hand. It was time to face a new fear, one that their leader had overpowered some time ago. As it was, that hadn't stopped the child tearfully screeching every time the gang went to collect supplies. Noone was pleased of having the kid join the field trip, but something had to be done before they all went fucking deaf or gave into the urge to feed her to their fencing.
The truck had parked up, Saviours pouring from the back, Mireya included. She could see the immediate confusion at the sight of her: the smallest Saviour, standing out brightly but messily against them in a long sleeved, multi-striped dress and patterned leggings beneath. The girl kept silent as an unbitten grave, brown eyes anxiously sweeping the rival faction as her carers dispersed to go and take more than the half they always insisted on.
Go play, they said, have fun, they said. Holding tighter onto Ellie the Elephant, Mireya started up the path. Most Alexandrians were caught between staring and keeping themselves out of harm and attention's way, but their odd behaviour just put her at further unease. She wished she had her own Lucille, because while Mireya felt afraid, there were voices deep inside telling the seven year old they all deserved to die awake.
Something caught the youngster's attention: glass windows and a steeple, standing out against the rest of the rather lovely looking homes. A church. It rose up old feelings, memories of days when the dead did not rise, but also of when her family was smaller and worse than the one she had now. Checking behind her, everyone seemed busy, and Mireya decided to wander into the church.
Maybe God would hear her here.
