In Goethe's Faust, the greater cosmological conflict that underlies the whole story is Mephistopheles' attempts to lead Faust away from the divine path of dynamism and constantly seeking something greater, and towards the path of indolence and sinking into a life of idle luxury. Aside from this pretty perfectly lining up with Faust's sin affinities (striving forward = pride's eternal progress and gluttony's constantly hungering for more, indolence = sloth's refusal to act), it's also... basically just the philosophical conflict between Ayin and Carmen; the manifestation of EGO representing a determination to keep moving forward even as you make mistakes and suffer hardships, versus Distortion representing your willpower being broken and a refusal to face your issues.
gay emo company
friend suggested i draw faust and so i did, not the best thing ever but i like this
A list of every Faust EGO that has a dynamic of her sacrificing her own health in order to achieve victory (inspired by ladyofthebookcase's posts about Outis' suicidality):
Hex Nail: Its passive, named It Hurts!, makes her deal more damage based on how many debuffs she's currently suffering from.
Fluid Sac: Combining Faust's Awakening and Corrosion voicelines gives us "this battle will conclude with victory, even if I must disgorge everything", implying a "victory at all costs" mindset.
Thoracalgia: When Corroded, Faust will sacrifice up to 40% of her health to instantly raise her Poise potency to 20.
Command: Meltdown: When Corroded, failure to stagger or kill any enemies with this EGO will cause Faust to lose 20% of her health in exchange for getting double the health lost in shield.
Ardor Blossom Star: As with the ID it pairs with, self-burn is the name of the game; in addition, while it does grant Faust a one-time revive after using the ID's sacrifice move, doing so also gives her a boost to blunt and wrath damage on the next turn, implicitly stating that she should use ABS Max Attunement again immediately.
Interestingly, the more recent instances of this (particularly Thoracalgia and Command: Meltdown) are paired with EGO passives that restore health, and even the one voiceline-based instance comes from Fluid Sac, probably the best healing EGO in the game. Given how cavalier Faust was about getting impaled by Panther, it seems that Faust generally has a severe disregard for her own well-being if it means she can succeed, justifying it with how Dante can heal her (or, in keeping with how the literary Faust is a physician, perhaps she was treating herself before Dante was there as a cure-all). There's probably also something to say here about the Blade Lineage having a philosophy of allowing your enemies to wound you if it means being able to land a critical blow (see also Outis' whole deal, or Sinclair and Ishmael charging towards danger for the sake of bloody revenge).
