HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A MORE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
this is a bit random yap so feel free to disregard but i wanted to say that that i love when i see people that feel the same about mahito!! i often just think about how he's probably one of, if not the most doomed boys ever in fiction, but barely anyone reads him like that because of the outer mask of his personality and i just love this dynamic tbh. he's doomed to be ended by the very thing he was born from...doomed to be shackled to humanity in spite of hating its limitations and pretending to be free...probably perfectly capable of feeling all kinds of human emotions, but also completely clueless about most because of the nature of his existence. idk, he's just so interesting to me.
YOU GET IT‼️🫵🏽 (post for ref)
Mahito was the absolute best foil for Yūji and it's fucking insane. My favorite thing about a character is when they're given the innocence of a child but it's twisted in the worst possible way (Eren Jeager and Ryo (Devilman) are similar). Mahito's curiosity, growth, and "love" for existence made him out to be the deadliest villain in the series (imo). It's as evil to me as a character that just has a love for the game (Sukuna/Kenjaku).
The point you made about Mahito hating humanity, but never confronting the fact that he was born from it- flaws and all- until his last moments is soooo spot on. That's what made his death so much more powerful in the face of Yūji having the exact same epiphany, just in the reverse (Yūji hates curses, but his entire existence came from them). You have two characters that are realizing their roles have literally been switched right in front of them and they embrace it entirely.
Mahito feels fear for the first time like a baby that's just been born- he thrashes, is unable to run, seeks protection or escape, and is even unable to properly cry because, as a curse, he can't possibly conceptualize the idea of experiencing terror let alone expressing it. He's reduced to something wholly pathetic and almost pitiful. He kicks and screams and stumbles and begs Yūji to stay away and all of it results in the ultimate act of a child; running to the safety of their "mother". And to just really drive the nail into the coffin, his search for protection is met with a terrifying realization that betrayal exists (even for a curse like him).
