If I control a Favored Hoplite with no +1/+1 counters on it and I cast a spell targeting it but in response my opponent casts Shock targeting the hoplite, how will this resolve? Will my hoplite survive?
Remember that objects on the stack always resolve in First In, Last Out order.
If your opponent casts Shock “in response” to the Hoplite’s triggered ability, the stack will be ordered like this:
Shock
Favored Hoplite trigger
Original spell targeting the Hoplite
In other words, Shock will resolve before anything else. When Shock resolves, the Hoplite won’t have the benefit of its trigger yet and will most likely be destroyed.
As a result, when its trigger later resolves, the trigger won’t have any effect because the Hoplite won’t be on the battlefield. (The trigger will still resolve, it just won’t be able to put counters on the Hoplite or prevent damage to it.)
When the original spell targeting the Hoplite tries to resolve, it will be countered by the game because its target will be missing (assuming it only had one target).
