Arthur Ashe Kindergarten, Theatre + Poetry Mr. Martin

Using the dramatic strategy of ‘Tableau’ Arthur Ashe’s Kindergarten classes explored feelings and favorites. This week’s curriculum lesson delved into poetry by way of the poem “Halfway Down.” In Halfway Down the author writes about his favorite thing and place, which in his case was a “stair.” The first day we used Tableaus (frozen pictures) to express their favorite things to do as well as favorite foods. We also used tableaus to show how we feel about thing we don’t like and foods we find nasty. After working as a class, we split off into different groups, one group had to show Favorite Food frozen pictures and the other group had to show Favorite Things To Do frozen pictures. When it was time to present, one group had to be an audience and learn good audiences practices, while the other group performed. The next session explored favorite places to go also through frozen pictures, with a bit of “Pantomime” as well. The students were very excited and energetic in breaking down the themes of this poem.
