i hate to say it but it's scully's cancer arc is my favourite. it was such a rich era of angst and tension and raw emotion that gave us so many character-defining scenes.

With the air-car, after Ruby had prevented Sapphire from joining him in the final battle believing the same thing that had happened to Maxie and Archie could happen to Sapphire, we didn’t really get to see the full effect it had on Sapphire emotionally and mentally. We do know she was reliving her worst memory of being helpless and believing that she would lose Ruby again or that he would be harmed. What we didn’t get to see is the whole other side of Sapphire that feels useless in these situations.

Sapphire’s hatred of herself feeling useless goes back to the salamence attack when she was a child, where she had felt helpless due to just crying whilst her friend fought and was injured. Other instances of Sapphire’s insecurity of being useless are her punching the ground and furiously cursing after Team Aqua escapes her on Mt Chimney, refusing to give up on reaching the Undersea Cavern saying “she’d swim herself if she had to,” and her apologising to Winona for being useless because she wasn’t able to retrieve the orbs.

So in ORAS we have Sapphire at first believing she is losing Ruby again which causes the same trauma Zinnia had felt losing Aster (with Zinnia even feeling empathetic towards Sapphire) but then we also get her remembering the aircar and how she really felt about being cut out regardless of how hard she had worked and trained.

After initially feeling useless again, she realises that “hey, there is something that I can do,” and snaps out of it knowing that there are more important things to take care of then to dwell on her own insecurities of feeling useless. This is part of Sapphires seeing where a problem is and fixing it, like how she had changed herself to become stronger to protect herself and to spend more time with her Father. Her way of dealing with her fears and insecurities can be seen as completely opposite to Ruby, who will just run away or avoid situations that are uncomfortable, like how he had avoided telling Sapphire about the asteroid due to his own fears.

When Sapphire does meet up with Ruby again she doesn’t show anger like she did back at Fortree but rather puts her emotions aside to focus on how to stop the asteroid (this can be seen as akin to how Y dealt with X after her initiation).

This shows how mature Sapphire has become since Fortree where she would have just become frustrated with Ruby (although she had every right to) and demanded why he didn’t tell her which may not have resulted in an answer, but she handled it in a much more reasonable manner.

Sapphire knows that he has trouble expressing how he feels, she understands him much more than she did back at Fortree. As she said when leaving Mirage Island, she knows that he pretends to be insensitive he is a nice guy underneath, he has reasons for the seemingly jerkish things he does. That doesn’t mean that she won’t explain what he has done wrong, which she does calmly with a final warning to not be pushed aside again.

Sapphire really is an understanding person (mostly due to a high intuitive and observative ability as well as being empathetic) and even mentions that Ruby trying to do things on his own is a habit of his. She just doesn’t want to be left out when it comes to important situations due to her believing that she wasn’t good enough since she was the only person who didn’t know of the upcoming disaster. Once Ruby finally expresses how he feels about her and why he does things seemingly without reason due to his fears, Sapphire realises that she hadn’t been left out due to her own weakness as she had believed that she was. 

One thing I love about Sapphire, is that upon hearing about the asteroid she’s hardly even phased about the asteroid itself, she just wants to be able to do something about it. This is like in RS where she was less concerned about possibly dying from Groudon and Kyorge and more concerned about not actually being able to help in any way, like being unable to reach the Undersea Cavern. Sapphire never gives up, she just does what she can to the best of her abilities.
