Who were the original Forties hipsters? And did they really live the prototypical sex, drugs and rock'n'roll lifestyle long before rock'n'roll was invented?

In class, we talked about the Beats being the original hipsters who settled into San Francisco in the 1950s.  Although this article mentions the Beats as hipsters, it indicates that the original hipsters began from the hepcats in the 40s and even discussed the expressions of it in the 30s.  While the hipsters became a prominent subculture in the 50s, we can argue that it has been developing for decades before.
