BITTERSWEET ↳chapter two: it’s a rite of passage

“Can I help you?” the lady at Southside High’s front desk asked, even though she and Carmen had done this little dance before—on several occasions.  

“I’m here for the children,” she said, gesturing broadly at the trio.  Toni and Fangs stood up, each of them slinging an arm around Sweet Pea to shoulder his weight.  

The secretary gave her a look of disgust, and Carmen snarled back at her as she accepted the pen and the clipboard with the sign-out forms.  “They’re not to come back until Monday,” the woman informed her.  “And you might want to think about getting them under control.” 

“Got it,” Carmen retorted.  “I’ll be sure to send them all to their rooms when we get home.”
